In the third episode of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List season 1, titled "Adjusted Gross", Kathy struggles to balance her career and personal life. She hires a new assistant, Jessica, who has no prior experience as an assistant and Kathy has to teach her everything from making coffee to scheduling meetings.
Meanwhile, Kathy's accountant informs her that she owes the IRS a significant amount of money in back taxes. Kathy is shocked and starts to panic as she doesn't have the money to pay the IRS. She decides to go on a last-minute comedy tour to make the money she needs to pay her taxes.
Kathy's tour takes her to different cities across the country, including San Francisco and Tempe. She encounters some issues while on tour, such as a less than stellar hotel room and an audience member who throws an object at her on stage. Despite these setbacks, she pushes through and gives her all during each performance.
Back in Los Angeles, Kathy's sister Joyce comes to visit her. Joyce is a devout Catholic and often disapproves of Kathy's lifestyle and career choices. Kathy tries to prove to Joyce that she's not a bad person and that she's successful in her own right. They spend the day shopping and bonding, but when Kathy has to go and perform a comedy set, Joyce declines to go with her.
As the deadline to pay her back taxes approaches, Kathy becomes increasingly stressed and worried. She receives some advice from fellow comedian and friend Joan Rivers, who tells her that she's not alone in facing tax issues and that she'll get through it.
Finally, Kathy gets a call from her accountant, who tells her that they were able to negotiate a payment plan with the IRS. Kathy is relieved and grateful that she can finally put this tax issue behind her.
The episode ends with Kathy hosting a housewarming party at her new home, where she celebrates with her friends and family. She reflects on the ups and downs of her career and personal life, and expresses gratitude for all the support she's received along the way.
