  • January 12, 2009

In the first episode of Natsume Yujincho, titled "The Cat and the Book of Friends," we are introduced to Takashi Natsume, a young boy who has the ability to see spirits. Takashi has moved from one relative's home to another ever since his parents died when he was younger. He has never been able to have any friends due to his ability to see spirits, which others cannot see.

One day, while being chased by a group of spirits, Takashi stumbles upon an old book in his grandmother's belongings. The book is called the "Book of Friends" and contains the names of many spirits who his grandmother had exorcised in the past. The spirits fear and hate Takashi's grandmother because she bound them to the book and controlled them. Upon coming into possession of the book, Takashi realizes the book is a problem as the spirits have started to pursue him to gain the possession of the book.

As the story moves forward, Takashi meets a spirit called Madara or Nyanko-sensei who claims to be a powerful spirit in the form of a cat. Nyanko-sensei offers to assist Takashi by acting as a bodyguard in exchange for the Book of Friends. Takashi accepts the offer as he is unable to protect himself from the spirits that want the book. Nyanko-sensei also advises Takashi not to return any names of the spirits that his grandmother had bound.

Takashi, however, has a different approach. He wants to free these spirits from the book of Friends as they seem to be unhappy there. This leads to a series of encounters with the spirits and his first meeting with a boy called Kitamoto, who can sense the spiritual presence of Takashi. Kitamoto is curious about Takashi's ability and wants to learn more. He introduces Takashi to his friend, Nishimura. Kitamoto and Nishimura are friendly to Takashi and help him when needed. Takashi's initial feeling is to isolate himself from them but he begins to warm up to them as they show him genuine concern.

The first episode of Natsume Yujincho is both emotional and action-packed. The animation is bright and colorful, bringing life to the characters and spirits of the story. The story is based on Japanese folklore and depicts various supernatural spirits like yokai, who are often mischievous and unpredictable. The show effectively balances light-hearted humor with serious moments depending on the situation.

Overall, we see Takashi's desire to change things start to grow. From a lonely isolated child, he is starting to connect with people who want to be friends with him. Takashi's relationship with Nyanko sensei becomes a vital part of the story as Nyanko sensei acts as a guide and mentor to him. The first episode of Natsume Yujincho sets the tone for the rest of the series and leaves viewers with a sense of anticipation for what's to come.
