- January 12, 2009
In Natsume Yujincho season 1 episode 2, titled "The Dew God's Small Shrine," we see our protagonist Takashi Natsume continuing his journey as a teenage orphan with the ability to see spirits. The episode focuses on Takashi's encounter with a god of a small shrine in the woods.
As Takashi explores the forest, he stumbles upon a small shrine, which he instinctively knows is special. As he admires the shrine, he notices a small creature rummaging around the area. The creature is initially dismissive towards Takashi but starts to warm up to him as he offers it food. Takashi learns that this creature is the Dew God, a spirit responsible for the morning dew that covers the grass in the forest.
As they sit down and enjoy the food, Takashi shares his love for all things spiritual, and this strikes a chord with the Dew God. He reveals how his shrine used to have a dedicated worshipper who would visit him regularly but had stopped coming. As a result, the Dew God felt lonely and forgotten. Takashi is saddened to hear the Dew God's story and makes a promise to come back to visit him.
The following day, Takashi makes good on his promise and brings with him a messenger of the gods, another spirit, to see the Dew God. The Dew God is pleased with the visit and starts to blossom under the attention. However, Takashi is wary of the messenger and feels a sense of unease brewing in the forest. Despite his reservations, he continues to head to the shrine every day to visit the Dew God.
One day, the messenger spirit tells Takashi that the Dew God's small shrine is to be destroyed and replaced with a grander shrine overseen by the main god. The messenger spirit also warns Takashi that there will be consequences if the Dew God does not comply with the changes. Takashi is upset to hear this and is determined to help the Dew God.
As the deadline approaches, Takashi and the Dew God prepare to move to a new location, which Takashi found by putting his faith in the spirits. When they arrive, they find a spacious area to create a new shrine. Takashi and the Dew God work together, and Takashi even makes a small bell out of a bottle cap and presents it to the Dew God as a symbol of their friendship.
Soon enough, the messenger spirit arrives, accompanied by the main god, and they demand to see the Dew God. As they approach, the Dew God uses his powers to create a dazzling rainbow that captures their attention. Takashi takes this as a sign to ring the small bell he made, and the sound echoes through the forest, calling forth other spirits to the new shrine. The main god is impressed by this and decides to bless the new shrine instead, recognizing the bond between Takashi and the Dew God.
The episode ends with Takashi bidding farewell to the Dew God, who is happy to have a new home and friends. Takashi leaves the forest with a sense of joy and fulfillment, knowing that he was able to help a forgotten spirit find happiness.
