Ep 2. Lesson 2

Following the events of the first episode, Nodame Cantabile Season 1 Episode 2, titled Lesson 2, picks up as our protagonist, Shinichi Chiaki, arrives at the conservatory to find Nodame practicing the wrong pieces on the piano. After correcting her mistakes, he gives her some advice on how to improve her playing, to which she responds that she enjoys playing the way she does.

As Chiaki watches Nodame play, he notices how unique and lively her style is, but he recognizes that it is important for her to learn the basics before she can truly develop her own style. The two are quickly interrupted as their teacher, Professor Tatsumi, enters the room to start the first official lesson of the semester.

The lesson begins with Tatsumi explaining the basics of piano technique and noting the importance of developing good technique before building one's own style. The students are then instructed to play a piece in front of the class, and although Nodame is nervous, she manages to impress everyone with her energetic playing, much to Chiaki's surprise.

After the class, Chiaki and Nodame are walking home when they run into a group of musicians who are rehearsing for a concert. Among them is Masumi Okuyama, a flamboyant timpanist who takes a liking to Chiaki. Masumi invites Chiaki and Nodame to come see the rehearsal, where they meet Masumi's friend and fellow piano student, Kiyora Miki.

The rehearsal turns out to be a disaster, with the musicians not playing in sync and the conductor not knowing how to bring the group together. When Chiaki offers to help, the conductor, Franz von Stresemann, recognizes his talent and asks him to conduct the group. With Chiaki's aid, the group comes together and produces a beautiful symphony, which inspires and motivates Nodame to improve her playing even further.

As the episode comes to a close, Chiaki and Nodame attend a concert where Stresemann is performing. After the concert, they talk with him, and he encourages Chiaki to become a conductor, noting his potential as a musical leader.
