Noir season 1 episode 9, "Intoccabile (Acte II)" continues the action-packed narrative of this gritty anime series about two assassins on the run. In this episode, Noir's protagonists, Mireille and Kirika, find themselves at odds with an Italian assassination organization. Known as the Soldats, this group is deeply entrenched in the shadowy criminal underworld of Europe and they prove to be a formidable adversary for the pair of hitwomen.
The episode begins with Mireille and Kirika bickering over dinner in a small Italian restaurant. Their playful banter is cut short when they discover that their next target, an Italian prosecutor named Salvatore Paladino, is being protected by the Soldats. The girls are initially hesitant to take on such a well-connected organization, but they are spurred into action when they learn that the prosecutor is involved in the murder of their families.
The second act of "Intoccabile" sees Mireille and Kirika infiltrating the Soldats' compound where Paladino is being held. They are quickly discovered by the Soldats guards and start a fierce firefight. Noir is known for its stunning action sequences and this episode doesn't disappoint. The fight scenes are expertly choreographed and the animation is top-notch. Every gunshot and explosion is highly detailed and the music adds a frenetic energy to the action.
Mireille and Kirika succeed in rescuing Paladino, but they soon realize that they are being tailed by the Soldats' boss, a man called Altena. Altena is a cunning strategist and proves to be a worthy adversary for the girls. The episode builds to a tense showdown between Altena and Mireille, with Kirika in the middle. The dialogue in this scene is surprisingly nuanced for an action anime, touching on themes of revenge, betrayal, and redemption.
Overall, "Intoccabile (Acte II)" is a fantastic episode of Noir. The action is thrilling, the animation is stunning, and the story is engaging. Even viewers who aren't typically fans of anime will appreciate the series' dark, mature tone and complex characters. Noir is an underappreciated gem in the anime canon and this episode is a great example of why it deserves more attention.
