Ep 1. The Scruffy Cat and the Cursed High Schooler

The anime series Nyan Koi! follows the story of high school boy, Junpei Kousaka who has a reputation for being allergic to cats. But it's not out of choice that he avoids getting near felines - he is in fact, severely allergic to them. Unfortunately for Junpei, his world turns upside down when he accidentally breaks a sacred statue of a cat deity in his town. The Goddess of Cats punishes him by giving him the ability to communicate with cats. This causes a major problem for Junpei, as now, not only does he have to deal with his debilitating allergy, but he also has to appease all the cats in the city when they come to him with their problems.

The first episode of the series is titled "The Scruffy Cat and the Cursed High Schooler". Having broken the statue, Junpei, in his haste to escape, accidentally bumps into an old lady who drops all the groceries she's carrying. Feeling guilty, Junpei decides to help her carry the groceries back to her place. While carrying the groceries, a cat suddenly appears and runs straight towards Junpei, tripping him over and causing him to fall and break all the eggs in the basket. The old lady gets upset, and berates Junpei for being so negligent. Frustrated, Junpei starts to curse under his breath. It's then that he realizes that he can understand what the cat is saying. The cat is upset that Junpei has disturbed its nap and demands an apology.

Later, while at school, Junpei's classmate, Kaede Mizuno, drops her student ID card. Junpei picks it up for her, and while returning it, he discovers that Kaede has a cat shaped keychain. Junpei is immediately smitten by the keychain and is about to confess his love for it, but he is interrupted by Kaede asking for her ID. When Junpei hands over the ID, he accidentally touches the keychain and starts to experience a strange sensation. Suddenly, he is able to read Kaedes' thoughts, but before he can explore further, he is interrupted by a long-haired girl.

Later, on his way home from school, Junpei stops to check out an old temple. While there, a cat appears and starts talking to him. The cat introduces herself as Nyamsus, and then proceeds to ask for Junpei's help. Nyamsus tells him that she is part of the Cat God's entourage, and that the Cat God is unhappy with him for breaking the sacred statue. She says that Junpei must amend his mistake by helping 100 cats in his town, or he'll be turned into a cat. Junpei is skeptical, but Nyamsus convinces him by demonstrating her power to turn him into a cat for a few seconds.

The next day, Junpei wakes up to find that he has a cat tail and ears. He tries to hide it under a hat, but it's difficult. Meanwhile, a scruffy looking cat appears at Junpei's doorstep, asking for help. The cat introduces himself as Tama, and says that he's lost his meow. Junpei takes Tama to the vet, hoping to find a solution to the problem. But the vet's diagnosis doesn't bode well for Tama. Junpei is determined to help Tama, even if it means going to great lengths to find a cure for his ailment.

The first episode of Nyan Koi! introduces the central premise of the show - Junpei's desperate efforts to help cats in his town while trying to fight off his allergy to them. The episode sets up the groundwork for the rest of the series, featuring colorful characters, witty dialogues, and interesting situations. It's a humorous and light-hearted start to the show, leaving the audience wanting more.
