The film series was released in large segments called borders and was produced by studio Production I.G and directed by Kazuchika Kise. The series follows the exploits of the Public Security division battling crime and corruption in the far-flung techno reaches of a dystopian, post apocalyptic cyber world. The series was notable as a reboot in that it featured a brand new voice cast, notably in the recasting of central protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi.
