In the first episode of Saiunkoku Monogatari, we are introduced to the main character, Shurei Hong, a young woman living in poverty in the fictional kingdom of Saiunkoku. Shurei's father is a scholar who has fallen on hard times, and her family is struggling to make ends meet. Despite their situation, Shurei is determined to follow in her father's footsteps and become a scholar herself.

One day, Shurei is approached by a member of the royal court with a proposition. The emperor of Saiunkoku, who is known for his love of learning, has recently implemented a new policy to encourage education among the common people. The court is searching for a young woman to serve as a tutor for the emperor's youngest son, who has shown a keen interest in learning but has thus far been unsuccessful in finding a suitable tutor. The catch? The position is one of great importance, and the court is looking for someone who can handle the responsibility with grace and intelligence.

Despite the potential dangers of working in the imperial palace, Shurei is eager to take on the challenge. She sees the position as an opportunity to not only secure financial stability for her family but also to prove herself as a scholar and perhaps even gain the respect of the emperor himself.

After arriving at the palace, Shurei is assigned to the young prince's residence, where she quickly discovers that her student is not the only one in need of her tutelage. The prince's bodyguard, Seiran Shi, is also present, and he makes it clear from the outset that he is not pleased with Shurei's presence. Despite his hostility, Shurei perseveres and begins to make progress with the prince's studies.

Meanwhile, Shurei learns more about the political climate of Saiunkoku and the various factions vying for power. She also catches the attention of several high-ranking officials, including the emperor himself, who seems to take an interest in her abilities as a scholar.

As the episode comes to a close, Shurei finds herself embroiled in a dangerous political plot, and she must rely on her wit and intelligence to navigate the treacherous waters of palace intrigue. With her quick thinking and determination, Shurei proves that there is indeed a different side to every good story.
