As the eighth episode of the first season of Seirei no Moribito, Swordsmith, follows the continuation of the story as the viewers journey with protagonist Balsa and her charge, Prince Chagum. The episode begins with Balsa and Chagum searching for a swordsmith who might be able to repair Chagum's broken spirit spear which was rendered useless in the battles before. The quest towards finding the swordsmith takes the duo to a village where they learn about a master swordsmith named Shuga.

Upon arriving at the village, Balsa and Chagum are introduced to the swordsmith who seems to be quite old. In a brief conversation, the viewers learn that Shuga is considered to be a popular and skilled sword-maker. However, his age and deteriorating health had made things worse for him. The duo begins to make their request, but the old man hesitates to take on the job and reveals that he no longer makes swords. But through the conversation that ensues with Balsa, it becomes clear that Shuga would not decline to take on the job when asked politely.

Balsa and Chagum also learn from the villagers that the sword of Shuga is a famous sword, and they are directed to the nearby mountains, where the sword is kept. The sword has been closely guarded for many generations, and it’s believed to be cursed. Balsa and Chagum were advised to stay away since no one who has ever ventured out to the mountains have ever returned, but Balsa, being the brave warrior she is, is not afraid to take on the challenge.

Unbeknownst to Balsa and Chagum, they are being watched by Fox spirits, who warns each other of their presence. Fearing that they could be after the sacred sword, they urge their leader to take measures to protect the sword. Meanwhile, Balsa and Chagum embark on their journey to the mountains. The journey to the mountain proves to be quite long and arduous as they navigate through the difficult terrain. As they move further, it becomes evident that the curse of the sword is real, as the more they climb, the more intense the darkness becomes.

As they get closer to the sword, they notice a group of people surrounding something with swords drawn. It turns out that they are a group of villagers who have come to retrieve the sword. They claim that they require the sword to protect themselves from being attacked by fox spirits. Balsa realizes the sword is too special to be placed in the hands of such people and therefore takes up the challenge to protect it.

The group initially wants to fight Balsa for it. However, upon noticing her strength in battle, the villagers back down and allow Balsa and Chagum to leave with the sword. But as soon as they leave the group behind, they are captured by the fox spirits. Balsa and Chagum are taken to a cave where they meet the spiritual leader of the fox spirits who happens to be related to Chagum's mother. She wants to take Chagum back to the sea, but the boy refuses, putting Balsa in a precarious position.

Balsa is given the chance to have her question answered by the spiritual leader. She asks why the fox spirits are after Chagum, and what destiny awaits him. The response was cryptic, and it doesn’t offer much explanation regarding future events in the show. Nevertheless, it provides some insight into the plot of the tale.

As they leave, the Fox spirits try to take Prince Chagum back forcibly, but Balsa is quick to defend him. It is at that moment that Shuga appears with the repaired spirit spear. The swordsmith begins to battle the fox spirits, indicating that he has come in response to their plea. With the new spirit spear in hand, Chagum also gets in on the fight and together they successfully fend off the fox spirits.

The episode ends with the group making it back to the village, and the viewers see that Shuga has agreed to replace the sword of the village, which has been broken for a long time. Chagum finally manages to rebuild his shattered spirit, and the trio is now heading back on their journey, ready for the next challenge that awaits them.

Overall, Swordsmith is an episode filled with action, adventure, and drama. The episode offers viewers an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the mysterious fox spirits and their significance, which is later introduced in later episodes. It also introduces viewers to the village of the swordsmith, which is one of the many towns that Balsa and Chagum visit as they navigate through the myriad of challenges that are thrown their way. The episode is a testament to the skillful storytelling and characterization that is present throughout the series. It keeps the viewers engaged and eager for more.
