Rukawa, who dominated in rebounds, brings Shohoku up to 70 to 67. Taoka fears the freshmen duo: the star, Rukawa, who can compete with the seniors, and the strange presence of Hanamichi. Taoka orders Uozumi to shut down Hanamichi. This causes Hanamichi to struggle with the rebounds as signs of his beginner status start to show. It is Akagi who changes Hanamichi's play as the captain subs in for Rukawa in lieu of receiving treatment. With Akagi on the court, Hanamichi is reminded of the special training he had gone through and steps his game up.
