The People's Court Season 21 Episode 124 Car Loan Crisis

  • May 10, 2018

The People's Court Season 21 Episode 124 titled "Car Loan Crisis" starts with the plaintiff, John, suing the defendant, Jack, over a car loan. John claims he lent Jack the money to buy a car, and Jack has not paid him back. On the other hand, Jack argues that John transferred the car title to him after the loan was paid off. Jack insists that he owes John no money, and the car now belongs to him.

Judge Milian starts the proceedings by listening to the plaintiff's and the defendant's stories. She asks John to provide proof of the loan by presenting the loan agreement. John digs through his paperwork to produce the agreement, which states that Jack borrowed $5,000 to buy a car. The agreement also includes the terms of the loan, the interest rate, and the repayment schedule.

The judge examines the document and notices that the interest rate is unusually high. She questions John about why he charged such a high rate and insists that it is illegal to charge more than the state limit. John appears confused and admits he did not know the legal limit for interest rates.

Judge Milian then turns her attention to Jack and asks him to explain the car title transfer. Jack insists that the transfer occurred after the loan was paid off, and therefore he owes John nothing. The judge asks Jack to produce the car title, and he produces a document that appears to be the title.

The judge, however, notices several irregularities with the title. She questions Jack about the inconsistency in the names and spellings of the individuals mentioned on the document. Jack insists that it is a genuine title and appears confident that he has the upper hand in the case. The judge examines the document further and discovers that it is a duplicate title, and the original is still in John's name.

After discovering this, the judge confronts Jack about the duplicate title and accuses him of fraud. Jack looks shocked but insists that he had no knowledge of the title being a duplicate. The judge, however, is not convinced and orders Jack to present the original title within 24 hours.

The judge then addresses the issue of the interest rate and reprimands John for charging an illegal rate. She informs him that he is only entitled to the state maximum rate and orders Jack to pay John the maximum rate of interest on the loan. The judge then asks John to provide a copy of the state's interest rate laws to ensure that he does not repeat the mistake in the future.

In the end, Judge Milian orders Jack to pay John the loan amount plus the maximum interest rate allowed by law. She explains to Jack that he cannot keep the car until he pays the loan, and that he must return the car to John immediately. The judge emphasizes to Jack that it is never okay to present a fraudulent document and warns him that the court takes such matters very seriously.

The episode concludes with Judge Milian reminding John to be more informed about the interest rate laws, and advising Jack that he should be more careful in the future. The judge wraps up by reminding everyone that the People's Court is always here to help resolve disputes.
