Jim Rockford is a private investigator with a reputation for being able to solve even the most difficult cases. In season 1 episode 14 of The Rockford Files titled "Profit and Loss (2)", Rockford is hired by a woman named Carla Wilson to investigate a case involving her husband, George Wilson. George is a banker who has been accused of embezzling $170,000 from the bank. He has been missing for several weeks, and Carla has not been able to locate him.

Rockford begins his investigation by talking to George's colleagues at the bank. He meets with the bank president, Arthur P. Grouch, who tells him that George was a trusted employee who had access to the bank's financial records. Grouch insists that the bank did not notice any irregularities in George's work until after he disappeared.

Rockford also talks to George's assistant, Laura, who tells him about a mysteriously locked drawer in George's desk. Rockford realizes that the drawer might contain evidence related to the embezzlement, so he breaks into the bank after hours to search for it. He manages to find the drawer and takes its contents back to his office.

As Rockford begins to piece together the evidence, he discovers that George was not acting alone. He enlists the help of his friend and fellow investigator, Dennis Becker, to track down George's accomplice. They eventually find him, but he is murdered shortly after they approach him. Rockford is convinced that the murderer is the real mastermind behind the embezzlement scheme and sets out to prove it.

Meanwhile, George unexpectedly returns home and is promptly arrested. Carla hires Rockford to clear her husband's name and prove his innocence. With his usual sharp instincts and skills, Rockford pursues every possible angle to clear George's name. However, he repeatedly runs afoul of the police, who think he is just a meddling amateur.

As the investigation deepens, Rockford begins to suspect that Grouch, the bank president, might be involved in the embezzlement. However, when he confronts Grouch with his suspicions, Grouch denies any wrongdoing and points the finger at someone else.

Determined to crack the case, Rockford pulls out all the stops and employs some of his trademark inventive techniques to uncover the truth. What he uncovers is a web of deceit, betrayal, and greed that threatens to swallow him whole.

In the end, Rockford not only solves the case but also manages to ensure that George is exonerated of all charges. This action-packed episode serves as a great showcase of Rockford's investigatory acumen, his determination, and his inimitable wit.
