The Unxplained is a documentary series that explores the unexplainable, bewildering and mysterious events that have occurred throughout the world. In season 2's episode 22 entitled "Bizarre Vanishings," the show delves into some of the most strange and perplexing disappearances that have left investigators and loved ones baffled.
The episode starts by taking the audience to the beautiful forests of Washington. In 1996, a 9-year-old boy disappeared while on a camping trip with his family. The boy, named Jimmy Beveridge, was last seen playing with his siblings near their campsite. Despite an extensive search, no trace of Jimmy was ever found. The show examines the possibilities of what could have happened, including animal attacks and abduction theories.
Next, the episode introduces us to a very peculiar case from Australia. In 1966, a group of five teenagers went on a school trip to a remote area called the Grampians, but they never returned. The show narrates how the search team discovered their abandoned campsite, including their tents and a school map marked with an "X." Despite extensive searches, the teens were never found, and the case remains a mystery.
The audience is then transported to Vermont, where a mother and her son vanished from their home without a trace in 1957. The police could not find any sign of foul play and couldn't solve the case. However, in 1992, a construction team found a skeleton while digging up a parking lot at the exact location where the house used to stand. DNA testing confirmed that the remains belonged to the missing mother and her son. The show explores how their disappearance became one of the oldest cold cases in the U.S. and the baffling discovery of their remains after more than 30 years.
In the next segment, the Unxplained delves into one of the most perplexing cases of all time. In 1930, three men, James Wilbanks, Ben Pierce, and Smith McGhee, went missing in California's Mojave Desert. Four days later, a search party found their abandoned truck and a mining claim that the men had filed. The search party found no trace of the men, no footprints, or tracks. While some speculate that a desert storm could have covered the tracks or that the three men chose to disappear voluntarily, the case remains a mystery.
Lastly, the show explores the case of a woman who became a missing person twice. In 2004, Donna Lass, a nurse who worked in a hospital in California, disappeared without a trace. A couple of weeks later, a mysterious postcard appeared in the mail addressed to her employer, featuring cryptic messages and codes. In episode 22, the show delves into the theories about the message and the possible significance of following the instructions on the postcard. Furthermore, the show narrates how ten years after Donna's disappearance, a convicted serial killer named Joseph Naso was arrested. He had a diary that suggested he was involved in Donna's disappearance. While he was eventually convicted on four counts of first-degree murder of other women, no one knows what happened to Donna Lass.
The Unxplained's season 2 episode 22 titled "Bizarre Vanishings" is an intense deep dive into the world's most puzzling disappearance cases. The show takes the audience on a journey with victims' loved ones and investigators as they try to solve the mysteries behind the perplexing cases. The Unxplained is a true-crime series that will have viewers thoroughly intrigued.
