The Wildlife Docs is a must-watch natural history series that introduces us to the amazing work undertaken by veterinarians at a zoological facility in Florida called ‘Busch Gardens’. Season 1 Episode 16 titled ‘The Best of the Big Three’ is a fascinating way to explore the lives and work of the doctors, scientists, and trainers who are an integral part of the team at Busch Gardens as they examine and treat three of the most extraordinary animals on earth - Elephants, Gorillas, and Tigers.
The first part of the episode focuses on one of the largest land animals on the planet, Elephants. These gentle giants are investigated by the medical staff as they address issues related to their long lifespans and the impact captivity has on their health. Much information about their behavior and habits in the wild is learned in order to provide the best possible care. The team performs a thorough examination of a senior elephant, named Ellie, as they collect numerous diagnostic testing and rituals related to age-related health problems that are common in elephants. We also observe another elephant being fitted with a custom-made shoe to help it deal with a foot issue and allow it to walk properly. Additionally, we witness the team performing regular physical and dental checkups, and administering various therapies and medications as required for optimal health.
The second part of the episode is centered on Gorillas - the most intelligent and impressive of all primates - and the challenges they face while in captivity. We experience the bond between the gorillas and their caretakers, but also the difficulties that come with helping them maintain health in the confined space. The staff provide various types of enrichment to keep the gorillas engaged, and we observe some of the routines like playtime and meal planning as they try to recreate the animals' natural habitats as best they can. We get to see the vets checking for parasites, injuries, stress, and other health concerns specific to the gorilla population as an overall preventative health strategy. The Wildlife Docs observe an established routine in which the team interacts with a juvenile gorilla named Bolingo, who is extremely playful and curious, and requires much attention from the staff.
The final part of the episode presents us with an in-depth look at the impressive and intimidating tiger population at Busch Gardens. Marveling at these majestic wildcats, we learn about the biology of tigers, including their digestive system and the sheer power of their jaw strength. The team performs a regular checkup on a tiger with dental problems, and we get to observe the use of advance monitoring equipment commonly used in animal care nowadays. The vets demonstrate the best techniques to minimize sedation in treating animals and allow them to recover quickly after examinations and procedures. We also learn about the effort put in place for conservation and preservation of the tiger species throughout multiple continents. It's evident that the mission of Busch Gardens extends well beyond that of captive animal entertainment, but into advocacy, awareness, and overall conservation efforts of endangered species around the globe.
