Sachs and Rhyme are paired up via headset. Sachs is Rhyme's eyes and ears at the crime scenes. He does not stress enough to walk the grid. Sachs finds a body in a railroad yard, which is later identified as a husband that was abducted. Clues in that crime scene lead to where his wife is. The wife is found shackled to a steam pipe opening. More clues are discovered.
Another person is taken and found in a slaughterhouse with rats eating his body. He was a student at the local university. Scraps of paper at all three crimes scenes lead them to a library. Sachs finds out that the clues lead to an old murder mystery novel, that the killer is repeating the crimes.
Sachs is able to save one of the next victims, but not her grandfather before the tide came in. The clues at this crime scene lead her to an abandoned subway station with the numbers being changed to Rhyme's former badge number. Sachs realizes that the killer is after Rhyme.
Rhyme is in his home when the killer enters and kills his nurse and a police officer. Rhyme is now alone. Rhyme manages to mangle the man's hand with his bed. The killer turns out to be Richard Thompson (Leland Orser), former evidence technician who lost his job after Rhyme's testimony. Thompson pulls Rhyme off of the bed after he freed himself and is going to kill Rhyme. Rhyme bites his neck causing him to hemorrhage. Sachs gets in the apartment and shoots Thompson.
