In the third episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun's first season, the Solomon family celebrates Dick's first birthday on Earth. However, the festivities quickly become more complicated than they anticipated.
Dick, struggling to understand Earthly customs, is uncertain how to celebrate his birthday. Tommy tries to explain the concept of cakes and gifts, but when he suggests getting Dick a gift, Dick becomes distraught and offended.
Mary, meanwhile, is tasked with planning the party. She enlists the help of Nina, but the two quickly butt heads over how best to celebrate the occasion. Mary wants to throw a traditional birthday party, complete with hats and balloons, but Nina argues that this is too childish and suggests more 'grown-up' activities, like a trip to a bar or strip club.
Complicating matters further is the arrival of Mr. Dubcek, the Solomons' landlord. Dubcek is a gruff and uncouth man who openly dislikes the Solomons. He crashes the party uninvited and tries to assert his dominance over the Solomons.
As the episode goes on, tensions rise and tempers flare. Mary and Nina continue to argue over the nature of the party, Dick struggles to understand the point of celebrating his birthday, and Dubcek continues to harass and belittle the Solomons.
Ultimately, however, the Solomons manage to come together and celebrate Dick's birthday in their own unique way. While the party may not have been perfect, it was a genuine expression of the Solomons' love and affection for each other.
As with all episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun, "Dick's First Birthday" is a comedy about the absurdities of human behavior as seen through the eyes of extraterrestrial visitors. It's a wacky and irreverent take on the traditional sitcom format, filled with off-beat humor and unexpected twists and turns.
