Ep 1. A Killer's Skin; Where's Peggy?

  • June 1, 2006

In the season 6 premiere of Cold Case Files, viewers are presented with two complex and compelling cases. The first case, A Killer's Skin, focuses on a gruesome and baffling murder that took place in 1993. A young woman, Amy Gellert, disappeared while jogging in a park near her home. Her mutilated body was later found in a river, and the investigation into her death quickly became one of the most high-profile cases in the region.

Despite years of investigation and endless efforts to uncover clues and leads, the case went cold. However, after technology advanced and new DNA techniques were introduced, investigators were able to take a fresh look at the evidence and execute new tests. Along the way, they would uncover shocking details about the killer's physical appearance and delve deep into the psyche of the person responsible for this heinous crime.

The second case, titled Where's Peggy?, is just as bizarre and tragic. Peggy Reber, a young mother, vanished without a trace in 1984. There was no sign of foul play, no indication that she had taken off of her own accord, and no solid leads from anyone who may have seen her in the area. As the days and weeks turned into years, Peggy's family were left to wonder where she was and what had happened to her.

In 2004, more than 20 years after Peggy's disappearance, a break in the case finally came. A man named Richard Bruns — a former coworker of Peggy's husband at the time of her disappearance — came forward to confess. He claimed that he had killed Peggy in a fit of rage and dumped her body in a remote area of the state.

However, there were still a great deal of questions left unanswered. Prosecutors had no body, no murder weapon, and no corroborating witnesses. The defense team argued that Bruns was seeking attention and that his confession was false. The trial that ensued was one of the most contentious and dramatic in the history of the state, and its outcome shocked everyone involved.

Overall, the season 6 premiere of Cold Case Files provides a gripping and thought-provoking look at two very different cases. As always, viewers are drawn in by the intense storytelling, the fascinating details, and the dedication and hard work of the investigators who tirelessly seek justice for victims and their families. Whether you are a long-time fan of the show or new to the series, this episode is a must-see for anyone interested in true crime and the mysteries of the human psyche.
