In episode 2 of season 8 of Dateline On ID titled "12 Minutes on Elm Street," viewers are taken on a chilling journey through a small town in Ohio. The episode opens with footage of a home engulfed in flames and emergency responders rushing to extinguish the fire. As the smoke clears, investigators uncover a gruesome scene. The bodies of a couple, Dann and Marilyn Moulton, are found in the charred remains of their home. The couple was dead before the fire began, and they had both been shot.

The couple had lived in their home on Elm Street for over 50 years and were beloved members of the community. Dann had been a respected doctor, while Marilyn had worked for the school district. The shocking and senseless murders sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, and everyone was left wondering who could have committed such a heinous act.

The investigation into the murders began immediately, but the case remained unsolved for years. It would take over a decade before a break in the case would emerge. In 2008, a man named Shawn Grate was arrested for an unrelated crime. While in police custody, Grate claimed to have information about the Moulton murders. He alleged that he had been involved but that there had been another person there with him.

The information Grate provided reignited the investigation, and the police department tasked two detectives, Jeff Johnson and Tony Lee, with solving the case. The detectives were determined to find justice for the Moulton family and bring the killer to justice.

As the investigation progressed, the detectives uncovered some surprising information about Shawn Grate. They discovered that he had a long criminal history, including prior convictions for burglary. He was also a person of interest in several missing person cases. The detectives believed that Grate's involvement in the Moulton murders could be the key to solving these other cases.

Detectives Johnson and Lee worked tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the Moulton's murders. They eventually discovered that Grate had been in the Moulton's home for roughly 12 minutes before the murders took place. During that time, he had stolen money and a gun from the couple. The detectives believed that Grate had not acted alone but had an accomplice.

The detectives' persistence paid off when they managed to track down Grate's accomplice, a woman named Elizabeth Griffith. Griffith admitted to being present during the murders and identified Grate as the triggerman. She had been afraid to come forward before out of fear for her life.

As the case continued to unfold, the detectives identified Grate as a serial killer responsible for several other murders and missing persons cases. He was eventually convicted of the murders of Dann and Marilyn Moulton, as well as other crimes, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Throughout the episode, viewers are presented with a detailed account of the investigation, including interviews with the detectives involved in the case, family members of the victims, and even Shawn Grate himself. The episode presents a harrowing true crime story that provides insight into the tenacity and dedication required to solve a cold case.
