Dateline on OWN Season 5 Episode 2 12 Minutes on Elm Street

  • January 23, 2017

In the Dateline on OWN season 5 episode 2 titled "12 Minutes on Elm Street," viewers are taken on a suspenseful journey through a small town in Kentucky. The episode follows the story of a devoutly religious couple, Debra and Fred Brown, who were found murdered in their home. Their much-loved daughter, Crystal, was the only witness to the crime and was shaken to her core.

The investigation of this 2011 double homicide becomes even more perplexing when a neighbor claims they saw a suspicious vehicle parked outside the Brown residence around the time of the murders. Another neighbor also reports seeing an unidentified man leaving the home.

Detectives quickly begin to piece together clues and come up with a prime suspect, Debra's ex-boyfriend, Steve Nunn. Steve is the son of former Kentucky governor, Louie B. Nunn, and is seen as a prominent figure in the community. Steve had reportedly become obsessed with Debra even after their relationship ended.

As the investigation unfolds, detectives discover that Steve had a history of domestic violence and had recently been fired from his job for erratic behavior. They also learn that the night of the murders, Steve had lost his tracking device, which was a requirement of his parole for a previous conviction.

Despite the mounting evidence against him, Steve Nunn denies any involvement in the Brown's murders. However, detectives are able to place him near the crime scene using cellphone data and security footage. They also find evidence that Steve had been stalking Debra in the days leading up to her death.

As the episode progresses, viewers are taken through the trial of Steve Nunn, where Crystal bravely takes the stand against the man she believed killed her parents. Through the use of expert witnesses and physical evidence, including DNA, the prosecution is able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Steve Nunn is guilty of the murders.

In the end, "12 Minutes on Elm Street" provides a harrowing glimpse into the heartache and devastation caused by domestic violence and obsessive behavior. Despite the Brown's deaths, their daughter Crystal's courage and strength in standing up for herself and her parents offered a sense of closure and justice to those affected by this horrific tragedy.
