Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Season 2009 Episode 11 Their Own Way
- April 13, 2009
In the episode "Their Own Way" of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives season 2009, host Guy Fieri travels to three unique restaurants that are each doing things their own way.
First, Fieri visits The Duce, a vintage boxing-themed spot located in Phoenix, Arizona. The menu at The Duce is filled with classic American dishes like burgers and fries, but the restaurant also offers some unexpected items like fried catfish and hushpuppies. Fieri tries the Duce burger, which is made with hand-formed beef and topped with candied bacon, a fried egg, and melted cheese. The burger is served on a soft, freshly baked bun and it's clear why it's the restaurant's most popular dish.
Next, Fieri heads to Hoosier Mama Pie Company in Chicago, Illinois. Owner Paula Haney learned how to make pie from her grandmother and now uses her own techniques and recipes to create seasonal pies using local ingredients. Fieri tries the mango cream cheese pie, which is made with fresh mango, cream cheese, and a graham cracker crust. The pie is light and creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness from the mango. Fieri also samples one of Hoosier Mama's signature savory pies, the bacon and egg pie, which is made with bacon, eggs, and cheddar cheese.
Finally, Fieri visits LaTexiana, a Mexican restaurant in Katy, Texas that serves traditional Tex-Mex dishes with a twist. LaTexiana is run by husband and wife team Rudy and Maria Rodriguez, who are constantly experimenting with new flavors and dishes to keep their menu fresh and interesting. Fieri tries the "King Daddy," a giant burrito filled with carne guisada, refried beans, rice, cheese, and guacamole. The burrito is covered in queso and served with a side of salsa, making it the ultimate Tex-Mex comfort food. Fieri also samples the "Boudin Lover" taco, which is made with spicy boudin sausage, eggs, and potatoes.
Throughout the episode, Fieri takes time to talk to the owners and cooks at each restaurant to learn about their unique stories and culinary philosophies. He also shares a bit of his own personality, joking with the cooks and customers and expressing his appreciation for the delicious food he's trying. "Their Own Way" is a fun and engaging episode that showcases the diverse and creative food scene in America.
