  • January 17, 2011

In "Funky Finds," the third episode of season 2011 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri takes viewers on a culinary adventure to some unique and offbeat restaurants that are serving up delicious dishes with tons of personality.

The first stop on the tour is at a place in Portland, Maine called Silly's. With crazy decorations and a quirky vibe, this eatery is a popular spot for locals looking for a fun and casual dining experience. Fieri samples some of their signature dishes, including Bacon Mac & Cheeseburger, Lobster Tater Tots, and a giant stack of pancakes topped with blueberries and whipped cream.

Next up is a visit to Frank's Diner in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This classic diner has been around since 1926 and still operates out of a vintage railcar. Fieri meets the owner, Frank, who shares the history of the restaurant and cooks him a breakfast skillet dish with eggs, potatoes, cheese and sausage. Fieri is also treated to some of their famous thin pancakes and homemade pie.

The third stop takes Fieri to a Mexican restaurant in Boulder, Colorado called Zolo Grill. This upscale eatery puts a modern twist on traditional Mexican cuisine, using local and organic ingredients to create their flavorful dishes. Fieri tries their Fire-Roasted Tomato & Jalapeno Soup, Duck Tostada, and Grilled Bison. He also learns how to make their signature margarita with fresh-squeezed lime juice and jalapeno-infused tequila.

Moving on, Fieri heads to Chicago, Illinois to visit a restaurant with a unique concept called The Scout. This sports-themed eatery is housed in an old firehouse and is decorated with memorabilia from Chicago teams. They're known for their creative take on classic comfort food, and Fieri dives into their Fried Bologna Sandwich, BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos, and Mac & Cheese Quesadilla.

Finally, Fieri travels to Brooklyn, New York to check out an Italian restaurant called Franny's. This eatery is focused on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to make simple yet flavorful Italian dishes. Fieri samples their famous clam pizza, homemade sausages, and a fresh arugula salad with tomatoes and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. He also chats with the owner, Francine, about the restaurant's commitment to sustainability and using seasonal ingredients.

Overall, "Funky Finds" showcases some truly unique and interesting restaurants that are breaking the mold when it comes to traditional dining experiences. From Silly's quirky decorations to Frank's classic diner charm, each spot has its own personality that shines through in both the atmosphere and the food. With zesty Mexican flavors at Zolo Grill, creative comfort food at The Scout, and fresh Italian dishes at Franny's, there's something for everyone in this diverse lineup of restaurants.
