  • February 7, 2011

In the sixth episode of the 2011 season of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri explores the world of signature sandwiches. From a small deli in Brooklyn to a seafood joint in Seattle, Fieri shows viewers the most unique and delicious sandwiches across the country.

The episode begins in Brooklyn, New York, at an Italian deli called Defonte's. Fieri speaks with the owner Nicky Defonte, who shows off their signature sandwich, the Nicky Special. The sandwich is piled high with hot roast beef, fried eggplant, and provolone cheese, all topped off with hot and sweet peppers. Fieri takes a bite and is blown away by the flavor combination.

Next, Fieri travels to Ruston, Louisiana, to a Cajun joint called Ponchatoulas. Here, Fieri tries their signature sandwich, the Muffuletta. This massive sandwich is made with Italian meats, cheese, and a homemade olive salad. Fieri jokes that this sandwich could feed a family of four.

From there, Fieri heads to Atlanta, Georgia, to a cafe called Home Grown. The owner, Kevin Clark, shows Fieri their famous Comfy Chicken Biscuit sandwich. This sandwich is made with fried chicken, sausage gravy, and a cheddar cheese biscuit. Fieri eats the sandwich with a smile on his face, impressed with the southern comfort food flavors.

Fieri then takes viewers to Seattle, Washington, to a seafood restaurant called Salumi. This spot is co-owned by Armandino Batali, chef Mario Batali's father. Fieri tries their Porchetta sandwich, which is made with slow-cooked pork belly, thinly sliced and served on a baguette with a spread of mustard.

Lastly, Fieri travels to Salt Lake City, Utah, to a burger joint named Lucky 13. Fieri meets with owner and chef, Travis Seegmiller, who shows him their signature burger, the Big Benny. This massive burger is made with two beef patties, bacon, ham, fried egg, and all the toppings. Fieri enjoys the salty and sweet flavors of the toppings and the juiciness of the beef.

Throughout the episode, Fieri showcases the unique flavors and ingredients that make each sandwich a standout. From Cajun spices to Italian meats and everything in between, viewers are sure to want to try some of these delicious sandwiches for themselves.
