Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Season 2011 Episode 8 Soup and Sandwiches
- March 7, 2011
In this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri sets out to find the best soup and sandwiches America has to offer. He starts off in San Francisco, California, where he visits a classic deli that has been serving up hot pastrami sandwiches for over 90 years. Guy watches as the pastrami is freshly sliced and piled high on rye bread, then topped with swiss cheese and mustard. He takes a bite and proclaims it "off the chain."
Next, Guy heads to Portland, Oregon, to try out a vegetarian soup and sandwich spot. The restaurant uses fresh, local ingredients to create unique and flavorful dishes, like a spicy lentil soup and a zucchini parmesan sandwich. Guy is impressed with how the chefs are able to make vegetarian dishes taste so satisfying.
Making his way over to Denver, Colorado, Guy discovers a sandwich shop that serves up massive hoagies that are big enough to feed a small army. The shop has been around for over 50 years and is known for their signature sandwich, which is stuffed with roast beef, pastrami, turkey, ham, and provolone cheese. Guy can barely fit the sandwich in his mouth but manages to enjoy every savory bite.
Heading down to Austin, Texas, Guy stops by a food truck that serves Korean-inspired sandwiches and soups. The truck started off as a side project for a chef who wanted to experiment with untraditional ingredients and flavors. Guy tries the kimchi pork belly sandwich and a spicy tofu soup, both of which he says are "out of bounds."
Finally, Guy heads to a small town in Ohio to visit a diner that serves up classic comfort food. The soup of the day is chicken noodle, which Guy says is just like his grandma used to make. He also tries an open-faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy, a dish that he says is "pure nostalgia."
Throughout the episode, Guy meets with passionate chefs and restaurant owners who are dedicated to creating delicious and unique dishes. He shows us how soup and sandwiches can be elevated to a whole new level, using fresh and unexpected ingredients and techniques. Whether you're a meat-lover or vegetarian, there's something for everyone in this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
