Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Season 2012 Episode 21 Coast to Coast Chow

  • July 30, 2012

In this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri sets out on a culinary journey across the United States in search of the best 'coast to coast chow.' He visits four different restaurants that each offer a unique take on classic American comfort food.

The first stop is in Santa Barbara, California, at a family-owned joint called The Shop Cafe. Here, Guy meets owner Gina Tolleson, a former Miss USA, and her son Nico, who run the restaurant together. The Shop Cafe is known for its hearty breakfasts, including their signature dish, the 'Bacon Waffle.' Guy also samples their 'El Capitan Burger,' a double patty cheeseburger topped with bacon and avocado.

Next, Guy heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to visit a retro-style diner called Tally's Good Food Cafe. Here, he meets owner Kelly Redden, who serves up big portions of classic diner fare. Guy tries their famous 'Chicken Fried Steak,' which is hand-breaded and fried to perfection. He also samples their 'Giant Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich,' a massive sandwich that's big enough to feed a group.

In Detroit, Michigan, Guy visits Duly's Place, a longstanding diner that's been serving up classic Greek-American cuisine since 1921. Owner Mike Ilitch Jr. shows Guy around the kitchen, where he watches as they make their famous 'Coney Island Hot Dogs.' These hot dogs are topped with chili, mustard, and onions and are a Detroit staple. Guy also tries their 'Loose Burgers,' a flavorful ground beef mixture served on a soft bun.

The final stop on this cross-country food tour is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at a restaurant called Memphis Taproom. Owner Brendan Hartranft shows Guy around their impressive beer garden and explains their commitment to using locally-sourced ingredients. Guy tries their 'Vegan Cuban Sandwich,' made with seitan instead of pork, and their 'Housemade Corn Dog,' which is served with a spicy mustard dipping sauce.

Throughout the episode, Guy marvels at the diverse and delicious cuisine found across the United States. From the hearty breakfasts of California to the classic diner fare of Oklahoma, to the Greek-American cuisine of Detroit and the creative takes on comfort food in Philadelphia, this episode takes viewers on a culinary adventure that celebrates the unique flavors and traditions of each region.
