The animated manga cartoon series Fighting Spirit from Japan was also entitled Hajime no ippo. It aired between 2000 and 2002, and reportedly recounts the tale of a young Japanese teen named Makunouchi Ippo, a brilliant young man who keeps suffering mistreatment at school from other boys, who bully him. The plot unfolds around his development of a new, determined fighting spirit after he is rescued by a kindly boxer named Takamura, who decides to teach the troubled teen how to fight back and defend himself more effectively. Several different actors played the voices of characters on the show.
