Sousuke Sagara, a member of the remnants of an anti-terrorist organization known as Mithril, is sent on a mission to protect a high school girl named Kaname Chidori. Kaname is believed to possess knowledge that could be used to create devastating weapons, so it's vital that Sousuke keeps her safe. Sousuke, however, has been raised his entire life as a warrior and is ill-prepared for normal, everyday life. He begins shadowing Kaname at school, causing her and her classmates to believe he is a stalker. Despite this, Sousuke is dedicated to his mission and is determined to protect Kaname at all costs.
Meanwhile, Kaname is dealing with her own problems. She's caught the attention of schoolmate Tessa Testarossa, who is also the captain of the Mithril submarine Tuatha de Danaan. Tessa believes that Kaname may possess the "Whispered" abilities, which are powers that allow the user to understand and even control advanced technology. Tessa and her crew are also on a mission to protect Kaname from those who would use her powers for nefarious purposes.
As Kaname tries to navigate high school life while being constantly watched by Sousuke and Tessa's crew, she begins to develop feelings for Sousuke. However, she's unsure if he feels the same way, and Sousuke's single-minded focus on his mission leaves her feeling frustrated and confused.
The first episode of Full Metal Panic! sets up the dynamic between Sousuke and Kaname, as well as introducing the overarching conflict surrounding Kaname's abilities. The episode balances action and humor, with Sousuke's awkward attempts at blending in with normal society providing much of the comedic relief. The episode also contains hints of a larger conspiracy, with the introduction of a shadowy figure who seems to be pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Overall, Full Metal Panic! season 1 episode 1 is a strong start to the series, introducing the main characters and the central conflict while also providing a fair amount of humor and action. The episode piques the viewer's interest and leaves them wanting to see what happens next.
