In Ghost Hound season 1 episode 6, titled "Brain Homunculus," the story starts to take a more sci-fi turn. The episode begins with a flashback to when three of the main characters, Tarou, Masayuki, and Makoto, were young boys working on a device together. They were building a mind-reading device and were convinced that the device worked, but ultimately, it failed.
In the present, the boys are now teenagers, and Tarou is now living with his grandfather in a secluded house in the mountains following his mother's suicide years before. After being attacked by a strange creature, Tarou begins to experience strange hallucinations. He sees what appear to be people from his past, and he hears their voices in his head.
Meanwhile, Masayuki's father, Dr. Nakajima, is working on a new project – the creation of a "brain homunculus." A homunculus is a miniature representation of a human body, and in this case, the doctor is attempting to create a replica of the human brain. Through the use of nanotechnology, the brain homunculus is designed to read and interpret human thoughts.
Dr. Nakajima invites his son Masayuki to the lab to witness the first use of the brain homunculus. Masayuki asks his friend Tarou to come along, and the two of them are amazed by what they witness. They see a man hooked up to the device, and the brain homunculus successfully reads his thoughts. However, things take a dark turn when the man begins to experience seizures, and the team is forced to shut down the device.
As the episode progresses, Tarou continues to experience strange hallucinations, and it becomes clear that he is somehow connected to the brain homunculus. He is also visited by a strange woman who only he can see, and she tells him that he is "chosen." The woman seems to have a connection to the creature that attacked Tarou earlier in the episode.
The episode ends with Tarou discovering the truth about his past and the mind-reading device that he and his friends built as children. He realizes that the device may have had unintended consequences, and that it may be responsible for the strange phenomena that he and his friends are experiencing.
Overall, "Brain Homunculus" is a thought-provoking episode that explores the limits of science and the dangers of playing God. It introduces new elements to the show while also building on the established mythology, making it a must-watch for fans of the series.
