In Her Case is the fifteenth episode of the first season of the anime series Planetes. The episode opens with the crew of the debris section on a salvage mission in space. Hachimaki, who is one of the main characters, is piloting the DS-12, a shuttle designed for debris collection. Suddenly, the shuttle experiences a malfunction, and Hachimaki only narrowly avoids crashing into another shuttle operated by the company that hired them. The debris they were after also ends up being caught by the other company's shuttle, much to the annoyance of the crew.
Upon returning to the station, Hachimaki begins to experience headaches. His coworker, Fee, is concerned and suggests he see a doctor, but he brushes it off. However, his condition quickly worsens, and eventually, he collapses. He is taken to the infirmary, and the doctor begins to run tests. The results show that Hachimaki has suffered a cerebral infarction, or a stroke, and he needs to be hospitalized on Earth immediately.
The rest of the episode follows the fallout from Hachimaki's stroke. Tanabe, who is another main character and has developed feelings for Hachimaki, is heartbroken. She visits him in the hospital and tries to cheer him up, but he is sullen and withdrawn. Meanwhile, the rest of the debris section is trying to adjust to Hachimaki's absence. Yuri, who is their boss, is forced to hire a new member to replace him.
The new member, Claire, is a talented pilot and quickly proves herself to be a valuable addition to the team. However, her presence causes tension among the crew. Hachimaki's best friend, Tanabe, and the new member, Claire, are at odds with each other as Tanabe feels like Claire is being opportunistic and taking advantage of Hachimaki's situation.
As Hachimaki recovers, he becomes increasingly depressed about his condition. He feels like he will never be able to pilot a ship again, and he becomes distant from his friends. Tanabe tries to lift his spirits by reminding him of all the good things he has accomplished and telling him how much they all care about him.
The episode ends with Hachimaki taking his first steps towards recovery. He is able to walk with the help of a cane, and he even manages to laugh with Tanabe. The rest of the debris section watches on with relief, knowing that their friend will be okay.
In Her Case is a poignant episode that deals with themes of friendship, loss, and recovery. It highlights the toll that space travel can take on the human body and the importance of taking care of oneself both physically and mentally. Through Hachimaki's struggle, we see the resilience of the human spirit and the power of friendship to support us through difficult times.
