Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is an anime television series that first aired in Japan in 2013. The series is an adaptation of a light novel series of the same name written by Akira and illustrated by Hidari. The show was produced by the animation studio Shaft, who is best known for their work on the Monogatari series and Madoka Magica.

The story of Sasami-san@Ganbaranai revolves around a young girl named Sasami Tsukuyomi, who is a hikikomori - a term used in Japan for people who are shut-ins and do not leave their homes. Sasami's shut-in tendencies are a result of her unique power - she can manipulate reality with her thoughts. Because of her abilities, the gods of Japan have tasked her family lineage with preserving their power and protecting the land from evil forces. Despite all of this, Sasami is content to remain inside her family's mansion and use her powers to manipulate the world around her to fulfill her wants and desires.

The series begins when a new transfer student, a boy named Tama, enrolls in Sasami's school. Sasami becomes intrigued by Tama and begins to observe him through her powers, spying on his interactions with other students and even following him home to his apartment. Through her observations, Sasami discovers that Tama is actually a god who has been sent to Earth to keep an eye on Sasami and her family.

As the series progresses, Sasami's siblings begin to suspect that she may be misusing her powers, and they begin to question whether or not their duties to the gods should take precedence over protecting Sasami. Meanwhile, Tama begins to develop feelings for Sasami, complicating his mission to protect her.

One of the most striking things about Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is its visual style. Shaft is known for their avant-garde animation techniques, and this show is no exception. The series incorporates a wide range of visual styles, including traditional anime animation, live-action footage, and abstract, surreal imagery. The show also uses a lot of quick cuts and jump cuts to create a frenetic, often disorienting sense of rhythm.

The show's visual style is matched by its eclectic soundtrack, which features a mix of catchy pop songs, haunting ballads, and even choral arrangements. The music helps to underscore the show's tone, which is often whimsical and surreal, but can also be dark and introspective.

Despite its often surreal visuals and non-linear storytelling, Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is ultimately a character-driven show. The series explores the relationships between Sasami, her siblings, and Tama, and delves into the complex motivations that drive each of them. Sasami, in particular, is a fascinating character - she may be a shut-in, but she is also powerful and cunning, and often uses her abilities to manipulate those around her. Her siblings, on the other hand, are torn between their duty to the gods and their desire to protect their sister from harm, and this conflict drives much of the show's tension.

Overall, Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is a visually stunning and thematically complex show that combines elements of comedy, drama, and fantasy. It's a show that rewards multiple viewings, as there are always new details to uncover and new layers of meaning to unpack. Fans of Shaft's other works, as well as those who enjoy experimental anime, should find much to appreciate in this series.
