- November 19, 1977
Super Friends was an animated television series that aired in the 1970s and 80s. The show featured a team of DC Comics superheroes including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, working together to protect the world from evil forces. In season 2, episode 42, titled "Pressure Point," the Super Friends face a deadly new threat that puts their skills, teamwork, and resilience to the test.
The episode opens with the Super Friends gathered at the Hall of Justice, discussing recent disturbances in nature such as earthquakes, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions all over the world. The team suspects that these natural disasters could be the work of their old nemesis, the alien villain Darkseid, who has been known to use his immense powers to manipulate the forces of nature. As they try to devise a plan to stop Darkseid, they receive an emergency call from Metropolis.
Superman rushes to the scene and finds out that a group of giant robots have appeared out of nowhere and are wreaking havoc across the city. He tries to stop them but realizes that his powers are greatly weakened. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman and Batman investigate the source of the robots and find a hidden underground laboratory that appears to belong to a mad scientist called Dr. Rebos.
Dr. Rebos shows himself to the pair and reveals that he has created a device that can amplify any physical force, including the power of superheroes. He intends to use the device to take over the world and he is now controlling the robots remotely.
Wonder Woman and Batman try to stop Dr. Rebos but find out that he has a number of henchmen and traps that are waiting for them. As they fight their way through, the rest of the Super Friends arrive to help in the fight against Dr. Rebos and the subterranean lab that he calls his home base.
The team soon realizes that the lab is set with traps and obstacles that continuously test them. While the robots cause chaos on the surface, the Super Friends are faced with an endless barrage of booby traps in Dr. Rebos's underground hideout. Flash is the first to fall victim, removed from play after succumbing to a trap that nearly killed him.
Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Batman soon discover a way to counterattack Dr. Rebos's device by using the ocean's immense pressure. Superman bravely confronts the robots again while the others shift their focus to shutting down Dr. Rebos's machine.
The team devises a plan to use the pressure of the earth's oceans to exponentially increase their strength. It works and they are able to infiltrate Dr. Rebos's lab and take down his henchmen while disabling his equipment, including the robot army. In the final battle sequence, the Super Friends confront Dr. Rebos in his lab and stop him from carrying out his evil plan. They emerge victorious, having saved the world once again.
After the dust settles and everyone returns to the Hall of Justice, the Super Friends discuss how their weakness, in this case, became a strength. Their methods of adapting and utilizing available resources led them to victory. Superman gives a speech about strength and how it can manifest in many ways, and it's up to good people to choose how they use their unique strengths to help the world.
"Pressure Point" was an action-packed episode that showcased the power of teamwork and creative thinking. The Super Friends prevailed yet again, not only over the evil genius of Dr. Rebos but also over their own weaknesses. It highlighted what made Super Friends such an endearing and beloved show – colorful characters, action, and adventure, with lessons on friendship and teamwork presented throughout.
