  • 5 Seasons

"I Love Lucy" was based upon the love life of Lucille Ball and her Cuban husband, Desi Arnaz. The supporting cast of Vivian Vance and William Frawley help to complete the feeling of big-city middle class living in the mid 20th century. Lucy’s role is that of a housewife. Desi is a singer who plays nights in local clubs, singing for a Cuban band. Lucy believes she is destined to be more than a devoted wife and works with her friend, played by Vivian Vance, to sneak into Desi’s show on occasion. William Frawley’s character, Fred Mertz, works hard to keep Lucy and Ethel’s (Vance) feet on the ground while trying to be a good friend to Ricky (played by Arnaz). The women, characterized in a stereotypical way, behaved like dizzy housewives. The men are understanding most of the time. Arnaz and Frawley also show a level of impatience with their spouses not sticking to their gender roles. During the airing of the show, Ricky and Lucy go on adventures across Europe and the United States with comical results. Their travels always include the Mertz couple so the men can do masculine activities while the women are left to their own humorous devices.
