Louise is back at the academy after her failed summoning ritual and the reputation she had received from her peers was not at all positive. Her fellow classmates see her as an embarrassment and to make matters worse, they also see her as a failure. Saito, on the other hand, is still confused and trying to figure out the situation he has gotten himself in. Louise's intentions are not known, and she is treating him poorly, making it hard for him to understand her.

After class, Saito is approached by gasp the commoner girls of the academy! They ask him for his help in fixing a magic door that they seem incapable of repairing. Unsure if he can help, Saito uses his knowledge about mechanics and actually manages to fix the door in record time. Inspired by his hard work, the girls decide to treat him to a night out, something he has never experienced before.

The girls take Saito to a nearby village, where they are all astounded by the newfound experience of drinking in a bar and hearing musicians perform live music. Saito is intrigued by this new world he has discovered and of course, they all end up getting drunk and becoming a bit rowdy in what appears to be a typical 'night out' experience.

Returning at the academy after a drunken night out, Saito and the girls run into Louise. Louise is not impressed with the situation that she has stumbled upon, feeling as if her familiar is not treating her with the respect she deserves. However, as she looks at Saito, she notices something different about him. He seems happy and relaxed, something she has never seen before. Intrigued by his newfound energy, Louise decides to question him, only to discover he had picked up a bit of magic by the girls' secret training.

Later that day, the academy is challenged to play a magical game against another academy as part of the 'Magical Tournament Games'. Louise, determined to prove her worth, chooses Saito as her representative to win the contest. Though reluctant, Saito is given some magic tools to use in the game, which he uncovers make a huge difference in his success.

Saito goes about winning the game with an inventive approach, using the tools that Louise's classmates had made him. The rest of the class and Louise are stunned by his transformation and as he is declared the champion of the game.

The episode ends with Saito being reassured by Louise that things may start to change, and things may not be as bad as he first encountered. Louise is beginning to have a new respect for Saito and is thoroughly impressed by the way he can adapt to any situation.

Overall, episode two of The Familiar of Zero does a great job of setting the stage for the rest of the season. We are given an inside look at the bullying that Louise has lived with and how this scene will evolve new as Saito inserts himself into her life. There are some great world-building elements in this episode, and the magical game provides an interesting wrinkle to the plot. All in all, a solid episode that sets up the rest of the series nicely.
