Joe tries to play matchmaker for Roy and Helen in Season 8, Episode 21 of the hit sitcom Wings titled "Oedipus Wrecks."

As the episode begins, the lovable group of misfits that comprise the Hackett brothers' commercial airline, Sandpiper Air, find themselves facing a typical day of hectic flight schedules and quirky passengers. But amidst the chaos, Joe Hackett, the older and more level-headed brother, is determined to take on a new challenge: playing Cupid for his best friends Roy Biggins and Helen Chappel.

Joe notices a spark between Roy, the portly and often grumpy owner of the rival airline Aeromass, and Helen, his equally stubborn and independent workmate. Despite their perpetual bickering, Joe believes there might be a genuine attraction beneath the surface. With their fierce personalities and opposing business interests, Roy and Helen seem like an unlikely couple, but Joe sees something that others don't.

In his quest to bring them together, Joe first approaches the task carefully, observing Roy and Helen's interactions to gauge their true feelings. He even enlists the help of his sunny and flighty brother, Brian, who is always ready to assist in any endeavor, no matter how unlikely or harebrained it may be.

After some hilarious failed attempts at inserting himself into Roy and Helen's contentious interactions, Joe realizes that subtlety isn't going to work. He decides to take a more direct approach and arranges a dinner for the four of them at his favorite Italian restaurant, Antonio's.

The anticipated dinner becomes a turning point in Joe's mission. As the evening progresses, the foursome begins to have a genuinely enjoyable time, even though Roy and Helen occasionally slip back into their usual arguments. Yet, there's an undeniable undercurrent of chemistry between them that catches everyone off guard.

As the night draws to a close, Joe's matchmaking efforts seem to be paying off. Roy and Helen start to see each other in a different light, showing hints of vulnerability and attraction that they had previously hidden behind their gruff exteriors. Although Joe still faces an uphill battle, he's content with the progress he has made in bringing these two strong-willed individuals closer than ever before.

Despite Joe's best efforts, the next day brings a major setback. A misunderstanding during a business deal between Sandpiper Air and Aeromass reignites the longstanding rivalry between Roy and Joe, threatening to ruin any progress made during the dinner. As tensions rise, Joe worries that his matchmaking mission may not survive the fallout.

However, true to his character, Joe doesn't give up easily. Recognizing that a real breakthrough will require a drastic step, he decides to stage an intervention of sorts. Gathering the entire Sandpiper Air team, Joe organizes a surprise meeting where the employees can voice their concerns and put an end to the feud between their bosses.

In this critical moment, the air is thick with both tension and hope. The employees share their heartfelt feelings about the impacts of the ongoing rivalry on their lives and work environment. As the meeting progresses, Joe's intention of bringing Roy and Helen closer together becomes clear to everyone present.

Amidst tears, laughter, and unexpected revelations, the meeting transforms into a cathartic experience for all involved. Roy and Helen realize the detrimental effects of their long-standing feud, not only on their personal lives but also on those around them. Bonds, both old and new, strengthen as the love and support within the Sandpiper Air family become palpable.

By the end of the episode, Joe's determination pays off. Roy and Helen take hesitant steps towards reconciliation, acknowledging their mutual attraction and the potential for something more. Although their journey is far from over, the seeds of a possible romantic relationship have been sown.

Season 8, Episode 21 of Wings, "Oedipus Wrecks," beautifully captures the complexity of human relationships and the power of love and friendship. Through Joe's unwavering determination and his selfless desire to see his friends happy, he manages to set in motion a series of events that may very well change the dynamics of Sandpiper Air forever. Whether Roy and Helen ultimately find true love or remain friends remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Joe's interference has opened doors that were previously closed, and the consequences will be felt by all.
