Boston Med is a reality-base d mini-series that delves into the inner workings of a Boston-area hospital system. The series takes place in three different connected hospitals. All the different types of hospital staff are portrayed in the series. It shows the day to day challenges faced by doctors, nurses, and various support staff. The series also follows several different patients as they struggle with their various health ailments.

Some of the patients on Boston Med go through incredible medical difficulties. One of patients who is the focus of the series is a man named Joseph. Joseph had been hospitalized, awaiting a heart transplant. Before he gets a transplant, he dies. Before he died, Joseph and his wife had discussed the importance of donating organs. It turns out that Joseph's face is one of those organs that is donated. The series proceeds to show a partial facial transplant, one of the first of its kind in the world. It was performed on a man who had suffered severe electrical burns to his face. The facial reconstruction doctor has done facial reconstructions on other patients who have suffered traumatic facial injuries but never something as immensely technical as a full face transplant.

The series also depicts the different personalities of the residents as the learn to become doctors. Pina and Daniel are two of the residents at the hospital and they could not be more different. Pina is nervous and insecure about making her way at the competitive hospital while Daniel is an incredibly aggressive, know-it-all who claims he barely needs any sleep in order to be able to function. Even the head surgeons are incredibly aggressive and confident in their skills. One heart surgeon, Jeff Ustin, is as famous for his temper as he is for his skills with a scalpel. The series also shows the private lives of the medical staff. We see their dreams for their own friends and families.
