Pilot, the first episode of Outsourced, introduces viewers to Todd Dempsey, a Kansas City-based manager for a novelty items company. Todd has just been told that the company's call center is being outsourced to India, and that he will be required to go to Mumbai to train his replacement, Purohit. Todd is initially resistant to the idea of going to India, but is ultimately convinced when he realizes that he may lose his job if he does not.

Upon arriving in Mumbai, Todd is immediately struck by the differences between India and the United States. The streets are crowded, the air is thick with pollution, and he struggles to communicate with the locals due to language barriers. He is met at the airport by Purohit, who is eager to learn from Todd and make a good impression.

The call center is located in a large, run-down building, and Todd is dismayed to find that the employees are not particularly interested in their jobs. He meets his team, which includes Asha, Gupta, and Madhuri, and is shocked by their casual attitude towards work. He quickly realizes that he has his work cut out for him if he is going to whip this group into shape.

As Todd begins to teach his team the ins and outs of selling novelty items, he runs into a number of cultural barriers. For example, Asha struggles to understand why anyone would want to buy fake vomit, and Gupta is unsure how to pitch a product that is not considered socially acceptable in India. Todd works hard to help his team understand the mindset of American consumers, and slowly but surely, they begin to improve.

Outside of work, Todd begins to explore Mumbai and get to know the locals. He meets an American ex-pat named Charlie, who shows him around the city and introduces him to the local nightlife. He also becomes friends with a young woman named Asha, who works at a local restaurant. As Todd begins to immerse himself in Indian culture, he realizes that he may be in India for longer than he anticipated.

Overall, Pilot sets the stage for the rest of the series by introducing viewers to the main characters and the cultural differences that they will need to navigate throughout the show. The episode is equal parts funny and heartwarming, and successfully sets up the fish-out-of-water narrative that drives much of the series.
