Top Chef Masters is a reality television show that places chefs in competition with one another. All of the chefs in the show are considered to be masters in their profession. Most of them own their own restaurants and many of them have published cookbooks. They are considered to be the top of their field. All of the chefs are playing for the charity of their choice and the goal of the television show is for the chefs to win as much money as possible while avoiding elimination and cooking complex, difficult dishes.

Each episode involves a Quickfire Challenge and an Elimination Challenge. The Quickfire Challenge starts of the show. The chefs are given a cooking assignment, usually something with a distinctive ingredient and a time-limit, and are forced to create something on the spot. The dishes are then sampled by the host, Curtis Stone, and the week's guest judge. The winner of the Quickfire receives immunity from elimination and usually receives a financial award to the charity of his or her choice.

The next challenge is the Elimination Challenge. The Elimination Challenge also usually involves a specific ingredient or difficult dish, such as a wedding cake. Sometimes the cooks cook individually and sometimes they do as a team. At the completion of the challenge, the dish is tasted and critiqued by the judges and the bottom half of the chefs are called in to Judges' Chambers. In Judges' Chambers, the chefs learn what their mistakes were and one chef is eliminated from the competition. At the end of the season, only one chef will remain and he or she will be declared the winner.
