In season 12 episode 7 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri is on a mission to discover the best Southern-style cuisine across the United States. From New Orleans to Nashville, he travels to some of the most renowned diners, drive-ins and dives to sample their unique takes on classic Southern fare.
The episode begins in New Orleans at a restaurant serving up classic Cajun and Creole cuisine. Guy dives right in, trying out their signature gumbo and jambalaya. He also samples their famous po' boys, which come stuffed with everything from shrimp to crawfish to roast beef. Next, Guy heads to a barbecue joint in Memphis, Tennessee, where he tries some of the best pulled pork and brisket he's ever tasted. He learns the secret to their success: slow smoking the meat for hours to create a smoky, tender flavor.
In Nashville, Guy visits a diner serving up all-day breakfast. He tries their signature dish, a massive pancake topped with a variety of sweet and savory toppings, including bacon, maple syrup, and even fried chicken. He also samples their biscuits and gravy, which he declares "a work of art." Next, Guy heads to a soul food spot in Atlanta, Georgia, where he tastes traditional dishes like fried chicken, mac and cheese, and collard greens.
Finally, Guy heads to a seafood shack on the coast of South Carolina. He tries their famous crab cakes, made with freshly caught crab meat and a secret blend of spices. He also indulges in a low-country boil, a classic Southern dish made with shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. As he enjoys his meal, Guy takes in the scenic views of the ocean and reflects on the rich culinary traditions of the American South.
Throughout the episode, Guy meets the chefs and owners behind each restaurant and learns the stories behind their unique dishes. He marvels at their passion for cooking and their dedication to preserving the flavors and techniques of the Southern kitchen. By the end of the episode, Guy has discovered a diverse array of Southern-style cuisine, from spicy Cajun dishes to savory barbecue to sweet, indulgent breakfast treats.
