Host Guy Fieri travels across America in search of the best diners, drive-ins, and dives in the country. In season 2008, episode 21, titled Where the Locals Eat, Guy visits some of the best local eateries in the country.

Throughout the episode, Guy heads to six different locations to meet some of the locals and try their beloved dishes. He kicks off the episode in Chicago, Illinois, at a spot called Calumet Fisheries. Here, he meets third-generation seafood smoker owner, Mark Kotlick, who shows him how they smoke and prepare their fish. Guy tries their smoked shrimp and smoked salmon, which are both local favorites.

Next, Guy heads to Austin, Texas, to a place called Jim's Restaurant, which has been a beloved local diner for over 75 years. Elizabeth Newberry, the owner, shares how Jim's has become part of the community and a gathering spot for locals. Guy tries their famous French toast, which has a secret ingredient that makes it extra special.

From Texas, Guy makes his way to Portland, Oregon, to a spot called Love Belizean. Here, the owners share their love for the Belizean food they grew up eating and how they are introducing it to their new community. Guy tries their stewed chicken and oxtails, which are both slow-cooked to perfection.

The next stop on Guy's journey is in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a place called Red Iguana. Here, the Cardenas family shares their love for traditional Mexican food and the secret to their famous mole sauce. Guy tries their mole negro and their signature dish, mole amarillo.

Guy then heads to a diner in Edgewater, New Jersey, called The Barge. This spot has been a local favorite for over 50 years, and Guy meets with the current owner, Cathy, who shares how they serve classic American fare with a twist. Guy tries their famous chicken pot pie and their unique burger topped with peanut butter and bacon.

Finally, Guy heads to San Francisco, California, to a spot called Radio Africa Kitchen. Here, the owner, Eskender Aseged, shares his love for African cuisine and how he is incorporating his Ethiopian and Eritrean roots into his cooking. Guy tries their vegetable and lamb samosas and their braised short ribs.

Throughout the episode, Guy highlights the unique stories behind each restaurant and shares his love for the local flavors. He also gives his honest reactions to each dish and provides his own personal recommendations. Where the Locals Eat showcases the heart and soul behind these beloved local eateries and their delicious dishes.
