Hellsing OVA Season 1 Episode 5 Brotherhood

  • November 1, 2003

Brotherhood is the fifth episode in the first season of the Hellsing OVA series. After the intense battles and revelations in the previous episodes, the Hellsing organization faces a new challenge as a rogue vampire hunter, Alexander Anderson of the Iscariot Organization arrives in London with his army of holy crusaders.

Introducing a clash of ideologies and beliefs, the episode highlights the contrast between the ruthless, dogmatic views of the Vatican's vampire hunting branch and the more pragmatic and nihilistic approach of Hellsing. The two organizations share a common goal, to rid the world of monsters, but their methods are vastly different.

As tension rises between the two groups, it becomes clear that Anderson is not just an ordinary vampire hunter. He wields a special knife that can destroy vampires, and his body is infused with Divine Holy Wrath that grants him immense strength and durability. Moreover, his zealous faith in God and his conviction that all vampires must be eradicated makes him a formidable opponent.

Meanwhile, Alucard, the powerful and enigmatic vampire under the employ of Hellsing, watches the developments from afar. He seems intrigued by Anderson's zeal and willingness to pervert his own humanity to achieve his goals. Eventually, the two adversaries meet, and the ensuing clash is a spectacle of blood, violence, and supernatural powers.

The fight between Alucard and Anderson is a tour-de-force of animation and action choreography. Both characters are depicted as powerful and skilled warriors, with Alucard's ability to manipulate shadows and transform into various forms and Anderson's superhuman strength and agility making for a mesmerizing duel. The battle is filled with dramatic moments, as both Alucard and Anderson push each other to the limit.

The episode also features some intriguing character development for Seras Victoria, the reluctant vampire who was turned by Alucard in the first episode. She struggles with her bloodlust and sense of identity, trying to find a balance between her human and vampire sides. In one scene, she confronts Anderson, trying to understand his motivation for his fanatical crusade. Their conversation is tense and illuminating, shedding light on the complicated relationship between humans and vampires in the Hellsing universe.

Another notable aspect of the episode is the use of religious imagery and symbolism. Anderson's veneration of Jesus Christ and his use of crucifixes and holy water as weapons against vampires highlight the recurring theme of the conflict between good and evil, faith and science, and humanity and inhumanity. The episode doesn't shy away from depicting the brutal and bloody nature of the conflict, with graphic violence and gore adding to the visceral impact of the story.

Overall, Brotherhood is a standout episode in the Hellsing OVA series, showcasing the best elements of the show's unique blend of horror, action, and philosophical themes. It's a must-watch for fans of the series and an excellent introduction to the world of Hellsing for newcomers.
