The television drama T.J. Hooker centers on Detective T.J. Hooker who is a fifteen-year police veteran who returns to his old job as uniform Sergeant after his partner is killed. Hooker witnessed his partner's murder and makes it his mission rid the streets of violent criminals like the one who murdered his partner. As a uniform cop once again, Hooker is assigned to train new police academy recruits. Rookie cop Vince Romano becomes Hooker's new partner. He is much younger than Hooker and is a little hot-tempered, but T.J. takes Vince under his wing. They work well as a team cleaning up the gritty city streets and become great friends. William Shatner portrays T.J. Hooker who is a tough cop who does not stand for any nonsense and often goes head-to-head with Captain Sheridan played by Richard Herd. Other cast members include Adrian Zmed as Vince Romano. Heather Locklear joined the cast in the second season to play Officer Stacy Sheridan who is the attractive daughter of Captain Sheridan. James Darren played veteran cop Jim Corrigan who was partnered with Stacy. Corrigan and Stacy often worked closely with Hooker and Romano on various cases. Hooker is divorced, but has a friendly relationship with his ex-wife Fran. Fran was first played by Lee Bryant. Another actress played the part later on in the series. Before Hooker was married he was known for being a ladies man, but he struggles with being single again. The couple had a daughter. The series debuted on ABC on March 13, 1982 and was cancelled on May 4, 1985. CBS picked up the show for one season. Adrian Zmed left the series when the show left ABC. Hooker did not get a new partner and began to work cases with Stacy and Jim. T.J. Hooker was a huge hit in its day and was on the air longer than Shatner's other popular series Star Trek. It may not have been intentional, but the speeches Hooker gave to criminals on morality were at times quite comical. Many viewers found Hooker's speeches to be an appealing aspect of the show.
