Set in the wild west, The Adventures of Champion focuses on screen hero Gene Autry's horse, Champion. These fifteen minute episodes were a collective spin-off of Gene Autry's Melody Ranch, which had been a radio network show, hosted by CBS and starring the singing cowboy. The spin-off starred Barry Curtis and Jim Bannon. The tale begins with 12- year-old Ricky North, played by Barry Curtis, who is orphaned and raised by an adopted uncle, Sandy (Jim Bannon). Ricky lives in the wilderness, with only his uncle and dog Rebel for company. Champion is a wild horse, who for unknown reasons will let nobody except for Ricky ride him. Similar to the Rifleman and Bonanza, the series stays true to the wild west, depicting such things as gold mines and indian problems. However, the main center is on the loyalty and friendship formed between Ricky, Rebel, and Champion.

Ricky has an elderly friend, Trem Holt, who loves animals. Crooks discover oil on Holt's land and plot to get rid of him so they can buy the property. When Holt is unjustly accused of murder, a lynch mob forms. Champ and Rebel help to clear their friend.
