Lucy Carmichael, a widowed mother of two living in Danfield, New York, finds herself needing a job to support her family. She turns to her wacky best friend Vivian Bagley for help, and Vivian convinces her to apply for a job as a meter maid. In season 3, episode 7 of The Lucy Show titled "Lucy the Meter Maid", Lucy starts her new job with enthusiasm, despite the disapproval of her children and her boss Mr. Barnsdahl.

Lucy's task is to enforce parking regulations on a busy street in the heart of the city. She begins by issuing tickets to lawbreakers but quickly realizes that her new job is more challenging than she thought. She receives insults and angry reactions from drivers who are frustrated with the parking situation. One driver, a man named Harry, even tries to bribe her into not giving him a ticket. But Lucy remains adamant and professional, refusing to be swayed by his advances.

The situation becomes more complicated when Lucy has to ticket her own boss, Mr. Barnsdahl, for parking in a no-parking zone. Mr. Barnsdahl is furious with her and threatens to fire her, but Lucy remains undaunted. Instead, she devises a plan to show Mr. Barnsdahl that she takes her job seriously and is not afraid to uphold the law. Her plan involves disguising herself as a traffic light to catch unsuspecting drivers who break the law.

The plan works, and Lucy becomes a local hero for her dedication to her job. Even Mr. Barnsdahl is impressed and gives her a raise. However, Lucy's success is short-lived when her children and Vivian convince her that her job is dangerous and that she should quit. Lucy reluctantly agrees and resigns from her job as a meter maid.

But Lucy's dedication to her job does not go unnoticed. The mayor of Danfield passes a new law that allows meter maids to carry pepper spray for self-defense. The new law inspires Lucy to rethink her decision to quit and she decides to return to work. She explains to her children that she takes pride in her work and that it's important to stand up for what you believe in.

In the end, Lucy proves to be a capable and dedicated meter maid, earning the respect of her boss and the community.
