Ep 13. Berry Treats

Unwrapped is back with another exciting episode, season 7 episode 13, named Berry Treats. Host Marc Summers takes you on a journey exploring the sweet and sour world of berries and all the delicious treats that can be made using them.

The episode starts with a visit to a cranberry farm in Wisconsin where an entire bog of cranberries is harvested using a flood method. Marc gets to experience the thrill of riding on top of a bog as it floats on a river, and he even tastes fresh cranberry juice straight from the bog. Next, we travel to California to see how strawberries are harvested using a unique robotic technology. At the farm, we get a behind-the-scenes look at how strawberries are sorted, packaged, and shipped across the country.

The episode then takes us to the kitchen where we see the creative ways bakers are using berries in their desserts. Marc visits Cake Flour Bakery in Kentucky where a pastry chef shows him how to make a beautiful white chocolate and raspberry wedding cake. Marc also goes to California to visit Black Market Bakery where he learns how to make a blueberry crumble and sees the stunning berry tarts and cakes that are made every day.

In this episode, we also get to see how mixed berry jam is made. Marc goes to a production facility where he sees first-hand how berries are washed, sorted, and made into jam. We also get to see the industrial-sized machinery used to create immense amounts of jam for commercial use.

Lastly, the episode takes us to the candy factory where we learn how candies are made with the use of berries. Marc visits Hammond’s Candies in Denver where he sees how berry-flavored lollipops are made. He watches as the candy-maker pours in the hot candy mixture and inserts the berry flavoring. The lollipops are then shaped and packaged.

In the end, the episode leaves us with a newfound appreciation for the taste and versatility of berries. From berries in desserts to berries in drinks and candies, there is truly no limit to what can be created with these delicious fruits.
