Joe and Brian try to find a way to get Sandpiper Air out of bankruptcy while the Hackett family is experiencing some labor pains of their own. Helen is experiencing terrible cramps and is convinced that she has a kidney stone. Meanwhile, Fay is due any day with a baby who she believes will change her life in unimaginable ways.
Brian and Joe implement a plan to save Sandpiper Air by creating an event called 'Fly Week' where they offer discounted flights to all of their customers. They hope this will be enough to bring the airline out of bankruptcy. However, they soon discover that they need a celebrity endorsement to make it a success. They approach royalty when they find a prince of a foreign country who has fallen in love with Helen.
Helen, who is still experiencing agonizing pain, is skeptical of the prince's intentions, but Joe sees the opportunity to get the endorsements they need to save Sandpiper Air. They agree to keep the prince's visit a secret, which leads to some hilarious moments as Helen tries to keep the prince hidden from everyone else.
Meanwhile, Fay goes into labor, and Buddy, who has been preparing for this moment for the whole season, rushes her to the hospital. He soon learns that helping a woman give birth is not as easy as it looks in the movies.
Throughout the episode, the Hackett brothers are forced to juggle multiple crises at the same time. Joe is balancing his responsibilities at the airport with trying to get the Fly Week event off the ground. Brian is dealing with Helen's kidney stone scare while also trying to help Joe with Sandpiper Air's finances.
As the episode progresses, tensions rise, and the pressure on the Hackett brothers starts to show. The Hackett family rally together to help both Helen and Fay get through their respective labor pains, but it soon becomes clear that this was not just another ordinary day at the airport.
'Labor Pains' is an excellent example of a traditional sitcom episode. It combines humor, sentimentality, and high stakes to create an entertaining, character-driven story. With genuine moments of heart and humor, it's one of the standout episodes of the season that showcases the strengths of the writers, actors, and Scott Bakula's ability to lead the series.
