As Rory rejoices after landing her dream job, Luke gets the residents of Stars Hollow together to throw Rory a grand graduation party. Emily and Richard are in attendance and listen teary-eyed with the rest of the guests as Rory gives a speech thanking Lorelai and everyone else for their support. Luke's thoughtfulness and kind gestures for Rory result in an unexpected reaction from Lorelai. Later, the morning that Rory leaves Stars Hollow, Luke opens the diner early for one last Gilmore girls diner breakfast before Rory heads out into the world as a political journalist.

The day before Rory's graduation from Yale, Emily and Richard throw Rory a party and during which they perform a song in her honor. During the party, Lorelai and Christopher come face-to-face for the first time following their separation and thrilled to find that they can still be friends despite their recent rocky relationship. Logan makes a shocking move at the party when he asks Rory to marry him, but Rory, stunned and unable to give him an answer, turns to Lorelai to help her make a decision. Later, Rory and Paris graduate from Yale and Rory gives Logan an answer. Meanwhile, Lorelai and Luke's relationship takes a step back when Luke overhears Lorelai saying that the karaoke serenade meant nothing.

With graduation rapidly approaching, Rory begins to become more and more stressed about her future. Lorelai tries to cheer her up by planning the perfect day of shopping and eating. Later, after seeing that Luke is once again wearing the blue baseball cap, Lorelai invites him to come with her and Rory to karaoke night at a nearby bar. After drinks, Lorelai sings an emotion-filled song, noticeably directed toward Luke. Meanwhile, Logan returns to Connecticut after a business trip in California and pays a visit to Lorelai to discuss his future plans with Rory.

Lorelai goes to Luke's for breakfast for the first time since their engagement break-up, but they both soon find that it's awkward to be around each other after everything that has happened. Later, when Lorelai's Jeep dies, she has Luke help her shop for a new car. While at the dealership, Lorelai and Luke's tension between one another mounts into a huge fight, which Lorelai takes as a good sign. Meanwhile, Paris, who has been accepted to dozens of law schools and medical schools, decides she has to break up with Doyle so their relationship doesn't play a part in her decision as to which post-graduate program to attend. Finally, Rory receives a letter that will change her future plans.

As the citizens of Stars Hollow prepare for the annual Spring Fling festival, Rory decides to bring Logan home with her and takes him around the town. Lorelai, seeing how close the two have become, begins to worry that Logan's immaturity and irresponsibility make him someone that Rory shouldn't be with. Meanwhile, Taylor upsets the town when he blows the entire Spring Fling budget on a large hale bale maze. In the maze, Lorelai and Luke run into each other and there they admit that they each made mistakes that ultimately lead to the ending of their engagement as well as apologize for their actions. Lastly, Rory heads to an interview with the Providence Journal-Bulletin, but has a hard time making decisions that will affect not only her career, but the rest of her life.

Lorelai takes a road trip to North Carolina to attend Mia's wedding, and after Rory has a fight with Logan over his immaturity, she agrees to go with. Emily invites herself on the road trip to get away from Richard, who is driving her crazy as he continues to recover from his heart attack. At the wedding, Emily becomes upset by how close Mia is with Lorelai and Rory. Later, Lorelai learns that Emily came to the inn several years ago to ask Mia for pictures of Lorelai and Rory from the years they weren't speaking. Logan makes a surprise visit to the wedding to get Rory to forgive him. Meanwhile, Lane and Zach ask Luke to be the godfather to their twins. Finally, when Lane goes into labor, Luke helps get everyone to the hospital.

While planning a baby shower for Lane, Rory gets an unexpected call from the The New York Times offering her an interview. Rory scrambles to prepare for the interview leaving Lorelai to take over baby shower preparations. As Lorelai plans, she finds her self running interference between Lane and Mrs. Kim as they bicker over how Lane will raise the twins. Logan admits to Rory that his business venture went bad, and Rory offers him full support until Logan begins to revert back to his old ways by traveling to Las Vegas with Colin and Finn to blow off steam. Meanwhile, when Luke finds that Liz and T.J. are trying to sell his boat, he decides to make big changes in his life by taking April on a boat trip for the summer. Lastly, Lane is placed on bed rest and has to be wheeled in her bed across town to her party at Miss Patty's.

At Friday night dinner, Lorelai finally decides to tell her parents that her marriage to Christopher has fallen apart, but doesn't get a chance to when an argument breaks out over Emily's new healthy, no-alcohol meals to help Richard recover from his heart attack. Lorelai gets Sookie to cook healthy and tasteful meals for Richard and Lorelai helps Emily with Richard's various business affairs. While helping her mother, Lorelai finally admits to Emily that her marriage to Christopher is over. Meanwhile, Rory attends Logan's birthday dinner and has an awkward encounter with Mitchum who asks Rory to keep Logan on track. Logan later receives disturbing news about an online company he recently purchased. Elsewhere, T.J., Liz, and the baby stay with Luke while their house is fumigated.

Days after his bypass, Richard begins the slow road to recovery and the Gilmores attempt to return to normalcy. Rory goes back to Yale and finds that her grandfather's class is now being taught by a young, attractive professor who catches Rory off-guard with his charm. In Stars Hollow, Lorelai tries to forget about her marital problems by helping Sookie plan a funeral for one of Michel's beloved dogs. Later, Christopher returns home and confronts Lorelai about the main issue hurting their marriage -- Lorelai's feelings for Luke.

Richard is admitted to the hospital and Lorelai, Rory and Emily nervously wait for news on his condition. Logan hears about what's happened and borrows a helicopter in order to be there for Rory. Lorelai, however, cannot reach Christopher, who is still angry over their fight, to tell him the news. Lorelai, upset that Emily is focused on her social calendar in order to stay calm, is relieved when Luke arrives unannounced and runs errands for Emily. When Christopher finally arrives, the scene at the hospital is more than he can handle.

Lorelai confronts Jackson after she notices that Sookie's behavior has been off recently. Luke and Anna square off at a custody hearing regarding April. At Yale, with Paris' help, Rory is able to get Lucy, who recently broke up with Marty, to forgive her. Later at Yale, Rory attends one of Richard's lectures and is shocked by what she sees. Elsewhere, Christopher finds the character letter that Lorelai wrote for Luke and confronts Lorelai about their relationship.

After spending her holiday break in London, Rory returns to the states. Meanwhile, Luke asks Lorelai to write him a letter of recommendation to aid him in his custody battle with Anna over April.

Lorelai and Luke share a touching moment together when Luke brings by Liz's new baby for Lorelai to meet. When Christopher witnesses their moment, he begins to think that Lorelai isn't whole-heartedly in their marriage. Later, Christopher and Luke have an angry confrontation after Lorelai and Christopher argue over exchanging vows at a party Emily is throwing and Luke is forced to hire a lawyer due to custody issues with Anna. Meanwhile, Logan reveals to Lucy that Marty and Rory are acting like they've met recently and Emily warns Lorelai about her marriage.

Lorelai starts to avoid Christopher during her daily life in Stars Hollow, leading her to admit to him that she's worried her friends and neighbors won't accept him. Upon hearing this, Christopher tries to bond with the people of Stars Hollow, but his efforts end up bringing the town knit-a-thon to an early end. Meanwhile, Olivia throws a 2002-themed party for Lucy, providing the perfect opportunity for Rory to confront Marty. Meanwhile, when April needs medical attention, Luke is forced to turn to Lorelai for help.

Christopher and Lorelai travel to Paris to take Gigi to visit Sherry and have a romantic and wonderful time together enjoying the sights of Paris as well as each other. Meanwhile back in Connecticut, Rory nears the end of her time as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Daily News and begins to stress out when the reality of her uncertain future catches up to her. To cheer Rory up, Olivia and Lucy suggest that they travel to Stars Hollow for a girls' night while Lorelai is out of town. However, Rory gets a shock when she discovers that Lucy's boyfriend is Marty, who pretends that he doesn't know Rory. Later, Lorelai and Christopher return home with a surprise for everyone.

Christopher convinces Lorelai to accompany him to Parents' Day at Yale to visit Rory, and Lorelai is surprised to find that Emily and Richard are there as well. At Yale, Christopher tries prove himself as a "cool dad" by inviting the Yale Daily News staff to an expensive lunch. However, all of Rory's co-workers drink too much, resulting in a bad situation when Rory gets wind of a breaking story and the staff has to leave. Meanwhile, Luke takes April to her swim team practice where the coach insists that Luke takes adult swim classes. During the lesson, the coach flirts with Luke and the two end up going on a date.

Lorelai brings Christopher to Friday night dinner, much to Richard and Emily's delight. However, when Christopher tells everyone that Sherry sent him a letter about how much she regrets leaving him and Gigi and how she wants Gigi to come visit her in Paris, Christopher and Lorelai get into an argument during dinner. Logan returns to the States on business and surprises Rory. At first Rory is ecstatic to see him, but after having dinner with Logan and his new business colleagues, she soon realizes that she's not a part of his business world. Meanwhile, Stars Hollow is covered in a bad odor when a train carrying pickles derails and Taylor refuses to pay for cleanup.

As Lorelai and Christopher begin to date, Lorelai finds it difficult to commit to the relationship wholeheartedly. Seeing this, Christopher plans romantic dates for Lorelai in order to win her heart. At Yale, Rory becomes friends with eccentric girls she meets at an art museum and Richard is a guest lecturer at his Alma mater. Meanwhile, April comes to Stars Hollow to stay with Luke for a few weeks while her mother is out of town and Lorelai has to bail Emily out of jail when she is arrested.

Lorelai breaks the news of her break-up with Luke to Emily and Richard and has a startling realization about her emotional life when her parents have no reaction whatsoever. Later, Michel convinces Lorelai to attend a cotillion dance that Emily has planned and while there, Lorelai has a chance to reflect on her childhood, seeing that some things her parents made her do weren't all that bad. Meanwhile, Rory struggles to make her long-distance relationship with Logan work, and Christopher makes a confession to Lorelai after he has a dinner with Rory.

When Logan has to cancel his trip to Asia with Rory, Lorelai tries to cheer up Rory by transforming her house into an Asia-themed get-away. Lane returns from her honeymoon with Zach, which didn't go as well as planned. Meanwhile, Luke tells T.J. about his breakup with Lorelai, leading T.J. and Liz to invite him over for dinner. Later, Lorelai and an obviously upset Luke run into each other in town and Rory is furious when she learns that Lorelai slept with Christopher.

Lorelai wakes up the morning after her night with Christopher. Though Christopher begs her to stay, Lorelai makes a quick exit and heads home. There, Lorelai starts to get rid of everything that reminds her of Luke and nearly empties her home of everything. Meanwhile, Rory gets a toy rocket ship as a gift from Logan and is confused by its meaning. She soon decides to go to London for the summer with him and soon learns that he already bought her a ticket so she can visit him for Christmas. Elsewhere, Kirk and Taylor cause an accident that seriously damages Luke's and Luke arrives a Lorelai's with a startling proposal.

Stars Hollow becomes overrun with troubadours when Stars Hollow's own troubadour is discovered by a record label. Rory, the night before Logan leaves for London, throws a huge party for him, but the wild party is overshadowed by the fact that he'll be leaving the next day. Meanwhile, Emily and Richard attempt to set Christopher up with a beautiful woman during Friday night dinner. Later, Lorelai confronts Luke about their wedding postponement and issues him a tear-filled ultimatum.

Rory meets with Kimberly Wells, a Wall Street Journal reporter, concerning an interview that Wells had with Mitchum Huntzberger. Rory wants the reporter to publish a correction to the article that would correct what Mitchum said about her. Emily, after having LASIK eye surgery, asks Lorelai to go with her to a meeting at a real estate office, and Lorelai reluctantly agrees. There, they look at pictures and layouts of several extravagant homes and Emily reveals a surprise she has in store for Luke and Lorelai. Also, Liz and T.J. arrive at the diner after a fight hoping Luke can help them patch things up. Meanwhile, Jackson and Sookie have to get rid of a yard full of marijuana when they discover it was planted in Jackson's fields.

Luke wants to throw April a birthday party and Lorelai eagerly volunteers to help. Luke crushes Lorelai when he tells her that he'd rather she not meet April yet, but is forced to enlist her help when the party turns into a disaster. At the party, Lorelai finally gets a chance to bond with April and turns the party disaster into an instant success. Meanwhile, Logan is rushed to the hospital after a Life and Death Brigade stunt goes wrong and Rory goes to the hospital to be with him.

With Lane's wedding rapidly approaching, Rory and Lorelai plan a bachelorette party, but their plans end up falling through, as does Zach's bachelor party, so the two groups party together in a parking lot. Later, Lorelai tries to find a date since Luke cannot attend. She tries to get Michel to go with her, but he gets Celine Dion tickets and cannot attend. Rory suggests that Lorelai take Chris, and Chris immediately agrees. Meanwhile, Grandma Kim arrives for the wedding, not knowing that Lane is a 7th Day Adventist, not a Buddhist like she is. After the wedding and several shots of tequila, Lorelai collapses and Christopher takes care of her.

Lorelai has a strange dream featuring singer/songwriter Paul Anka. Rory and Logan are back together but Logan knows that Rory still hasn't forgiven him. To cheer himself up, Logan decides to go on a stunt with the Life and Death Brigade. Meanwhile, Rory travels to Philadelphia to attend Jess' open house for his new store/art gallery/publishing house. There, Rory runs into Luke while on a field trip with April. Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai is horrified when she finds out that Richard and Emily have been real estate shopping near her town and tries her hardest to get them to dislike Stars Hollow.

After forgiving Logan, Rory decides that she needs time to herself and travels to Stars Hollow for some peace and quiet. However, when she arrives, Rory can tell that Lorelai is upset, but Lorelai refuses to admit that Luke going away with April for a field trip is bothering her. Meanwhile, Zach asks Mrs. Kim for Lane's hand in marriage and is surprised by the deal she proposes and Rory goes to Anna's store to spy on her.

Rory and Logan attend his sister, Honor's wedding. Rory offers to help the bridesmaids get ready for the ceremony, and is hurt when she learns about Logan's behavior while they were apart. Meanwhile, Lorelai babysits Gigi to help Christopher out, but is appalled by the 4 year-old's terrible behavior and Zach comes to the diner with a surprise for Lane.

For Valentine's Day, Lorelai and Luke are invited to go to Martha's Vineyard with Rory and Logan. The trip is disrupted by Luke's constant bad attitude towards Logan, but his attitude soon changes when Logan helps him find a Valentine's Day gift for Lorelai. Once things begin to go better, Mitchum Huntzberger arrives, resulting in an ugly confrontation. Meanwhile, Luke has to put Lorelai's worries that they will never get married to rest.

Emily, wanting to get to know her future son-in-law better, asks Lorelai to invite Luke over for dinner. However, Lorelai doesn't tell Emily about the postponement. Meanwhile, The Yale Daily News staff fires Paris and Rory takes over as editor. This angers Paris and she kicks Rory out of her apartment, leaving Rory to have to move in with Logan.

With April now being a part his life, Luke has to cope with the significant changes her being there has caused. Lorelai also must deal with the changes that April has brought to her engagement to Luke and tries to convince herself, and everyone else, that she doesn’t mind. At the Yale Daily News, Rory has to deal with the impact of the staff quitting in protest of Paris’ management and enlists Logan’s help to get the paper out on time. Meanwhile, Lorelai lets Richard and Emily know that they no longer will have to pay for Yale, resulting in a poignant Friday night dinner.

After not being able to work up the courage to tell Lorelai about his daughter, April throws Luke into a panic when she asks if she can spend the day at his diner. Much to Luke’s horror, April and Lorelai begin talking at the diner and April mentions that Luke is her father. But Lorelai tries to support their relationship and offers to postpone the wedding so Luke and April can get to know each other better. However, Luke’s reaction to her proposal leaves Lorelai hurt and confused. At Yale, Logan goes to great extents in an attempt to win back Rory’s affection and the newspaper staff rebels against Paris at the Yale Daily News. Meanwhile, Rory, Lorelai, and Paul Anka run a fortune telling booth at the annual Winter Carnival and Zack gets jealous after seeing Lane with another guy.

Feeling that he has missed too much and wants to get to know his newly discovered daughter April, Luke goes to have a talk with her mother, his former girlfriend Anna Nardini. Meanwhile, Lorelai sets a date for the wedding after finding the perfect dress, but she is worried by the nagging feeling that something is about to go wrong. Back at Yale, Rory happily moves into a dingy off-campus apartment with Paris and Doyle, and tries to avoid running into Logan. However, when Logan shows up at her apartment and declares his love for her, Rory breaks down.

After a long absence, Christopher reappears in Lorelai and Rory's lives with an offer to make up for lost time. Luke struggles with what the new person in his life will mean to him and his relationship with Lorelai. Lorelai and Rory enjoy their first Thanksgiving at the Dragonfly Inn, during which Rory receives surprising news about Logan. Meanwhile, as the band prepares for an important showcase performance, Lane has to deal with Zach's jealousy over a song Brian wrote about her.

A surprise phone call from Christopher brings up issues of trust between Lorelai and Luke. Later, when a person from Luke's past shows up in Stars Hollow, he has no idea how to tell Lorelai about it. After months of estrangement, Lorelai and Rory make their first move toward reconciliation and Rory takes major steps to change the direction of her life.

Rory is pleasantly surprised when her old flame Jess appears at her grandparents' house and reveals an amazing development in his life. Rory agrees to go to dinner with Jess, and when Logan unexpectedly joins them, an ugly confrontation develops, leaving both Rory and Logan to face the choices they have made. Emily is concerned about Rory's sudden evasiveness and tries to exert some parental discipline. Meanwhile, Luke agrees to sponsor a local girls' soccer team and Lorelai channels all her concerns about Rory into caring for her dog, Paul Anka.

As Rory's twenty-first birthday approaches, both Lorelai and Rory are saddened by the fact that their ongoing estrangement will keep them from spending the day the way they had always planned. Richard tries to convince Lorelai to help him with a plan to get Rory back to Yale, but Lorelai insists that Rory has to make the decision herself. While Richard continues to worry about Rory's future, Emily throws herself into planning an elaborate birthday party. Meanwhile, Emily and Richard are shocked when they realize that Rory and Logan have been having sex.

Richard tries to get information from Logan about Rory's future plans, but Logan mistakenly thinks that Richard is asking when the two of them plan to marry. Lorelai is in favor of Taylor's plan to change all the Stars Hollow street names back to their original historic names, until she learns that the street where the Dragonfly Inn is located was once known by a disgusting name. Rory makes a surprising confession to Logan. Richard finally faces the fact that he should never have let Rory drop out of Yale, and shows up at Lorelai's house to talk things over.

Rory does a fabulous job organizing a big DAR bash for Emily. However, at the party, Richard confronts Logan's father, Mitchum Huntzberger, about his opinion of Rory's journalistic talents, while Emily has an even uglier confrontation with Logan's mother, Shria, over the romance between Rory and Logan. Meanwhile, after a small kitchen fire at the Dragonfly Inn, Lorelai needs Richard's help settling the insurance claim and uses the time spent with her father to needle him about the fact that he has been unable to get Rory to return to Yale. Though he's annoyed with Lorelai, Richard has to admit that Rory is not where she should be.

Missing Rory, Lorelai tries to call her and is upset to find that Rory's cell phone is no longer in service. Sookie asks Lorelai and Rory to be the godparents to her two children in the hope that they will reconcile when they see each other at the ceremony. However, mother and daughter end up fighting when Lorelai realizes that Rory have her new cell number to Sookie but not to her. Logan learns that his father expects him to graduate this year and enter the family business. Wanting to break free from family pressures, Logan whisks Rory off to a weekend in New York.

Excited about catering the wedding, Sookie pressures Lorelai to set a date, but Lorelai won't commit. While completing her community service hours, Rory takes a job at Emily's DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) office. Convinced that she has a rival for the job of DAR president, Emily uses Rory as her spy. Logan returns from Europe and returns to Yale, forcing Rory to confront her true feelings about dropping out of college. Lane and her band return from their summer on the road. Luke agrees to take care of Lorelai's dog, Paul Anka, while she works late at the inn, and ends up rushing the dog to the vet. Finally, Lorelai admits to Luke her reason for putting off their wedding.

Rory begins serving her 300 hours of community service and finds that life on a road crew is not pretty. Lorelai and Luke try to decide whether they will fix up Lorelai's house or buy the Twickham house. Luke's sister Liz begs him to hire her husband T.J. as a contractor. When Rory pays Luke a surprise visit at the diner to find out how Lorelai is, he feels obligated to tell her that he and Lorelai are engaged. Afterwards, Luke confronts Lorelai about her estrangement from Rory. Feeling lonely, Lorelai adopts a dog at the Stars Hollow pet fair. Finally, during a chance meeting, Lorelai and Rory have an angry confrontation about their mutual hurt feelings.

Picking up on the same night as last season's finale, Lorelai and Luke begin making plans for their future, but Luke is embarrassed when word spreads that Lorelai was the one who proposed. Still hurt over Rory's decision to drop out of Yale and move in with Emily and Richard, Lorelai tells her parents that they can take care of Rory from now on. Richard hires an old friend and respected attorney to help Rory get an easy sentence for stealing the yacht, but the judge gives Rory 300 hours of community service. Logan throws Rory a "felon" party.

During the evening, Emily and Richard fawn over Logan, but Lorelai sees a side of him that causes her to worry about Rory's involvement with the Huntzberger family. Meanwhile, Lorelai gets an interesting job offer, and Luke tries to talk Taylor into closing the Stars Hollow museum.

After Rory tells Logan that she can't have a casual relationship with him and they should go back to being just friends, she is amazed when Logan insists he is ready to commit to her. However, when he brings her home to meet his powerful and intimidating family, Rory is shocked by his parents' negative reaction to the relationship. The following day, Logan's father apologizes to Rory and offers her an internship at one of his newspapers. Meanwhile, when Sookie is put on bed rest by her doctor, Lorelai calls Luke to fill in as the substitute chef at the Dragonfly Inn.

When Stars Hollow's oldest resident dies and leaves his house to the town, Luke has an ulterior motive for volunteering to help turn the house into a temporary museum. Dean is also working on the project, and offers Luke some unwelcome advice about the dangers of dating a Gilmore girl. To get publicity for the Dragonfly Inn, Lorelai does an interview with a travel magazine, but immediately regrets the unkind comments she makes about being raised by Emily. Meanwhile, Lane suspects that Zach is having a fling with music store owner Sophie, while Rory and Paris are both devastated by trouble with their respective boyfriends.

Rory regrets her agreement with Logan that they can date other people after she sees him out on the town with another girl. Later, at a party where everyone dresses as a character from a Quentin Tarantino film, Rory shows up with Logan's friend Robert, forcing Logan to admit his jealousy. Meanwhile, now that Lorelai and Luke are happily reunited, Emily can't understand why Lorelai still refuses to show up at Friday night dinner. Emily's second visit to the diner to speak to Luke leads to a bitter mother/daughter confrontation. Finally, Michel appears on "The Price is Right" and wins a motor home.

When Richard and Emily return from their second honeymoon, Rory attends Friday-night dinner without Lorelai, who refuses to speak to her mother or see her, and plans a girls' night out with Sookie instead. Richard and Emily then give a 100-year-old Greek book to Rory and have yet another maid. Rory surprises everyone with a rare outburst at her grandmother for interfering in Lorelai's love life. Meanwhile, Luke, who's miserable without Lorelai, takes his anger out on his customers and his dark mood causes him to burn the food and when one customer wants his omelet redone, he throws him out of the diner. When a meter maid is writing a ticket to put on Luke's boat (that is parked in front of the diner) Lorelai comes in time to put some quarters in the meter. Emily goes to the diner to talk to Luke. Meanwhile, Lane has a horrific realization about her mother's influence.

When Lorelai discovers that Luke's boat is no longer in her garage, the void she feels without Luke seems even more painful. Luke agrees to build sets for the elementary school's production of "Fiddler on the Roof," knowing that Lorelai is the costume designer and hoping that their paths will cross. Meanwhile, Rory and Marty makes plans to spend a day together, but Logan drops by Rory's dorm room and convinces them to come out to dinner. After a terrible evening with Logan's clique, Marty tells Rory how much he likes her, but she admits she has a crush on Logan.

Lorelai is frantic after the disastrous scene at wedding, and begs Luke not to give up on their relationship. However, Luke's decision that he needs time alone leaves Lorelai devastated. Stranded at Yale without her car, Rory is so worried about Lorelai's depressed state that she borrows Logan's limo and driver and heads home to Stars Hollow to care for her mom. Meanwhile, Taylor has the whole town talking sides on the Lorelai/Luke relationship.

Talk about bad timing. The night before Richard and Emily renew their vows, Lorelai and Rory feel obligated to throw Emily a bachelorette party. At the ceremony the following day, Rory tells Logan she wants a relationship with him even though he's not ready to commit. Later, when Lorelai, Luke and Christopher discover Rory and Logan together, half-dressed, the shocking scene leads to an angry confrontation between Luke and Christopher. A furious Lorelai figures out that Emily invited Christopher in an attempt to break up her relationship with Luke.

Rory is bummed when Logan, whom she helped write an article for the Yale Daily, doesn't return the favor by inviting her to be his date at a book signing party thrown by his father. When Richard sees Emily talking to man she dated, he rear-ends her car, forcing her to ride home with him. The Gilmores reconcile and decide to renew their wedding vows. Emily warns Christopher that Lorelai and Luke are getting serious and he had better do something quickly if he hopes to end up with Lorelai.

Wanting to make peace with Rory, Christopher shows up at Yale, but she brushes off his attempt at reconciliation. When Lorelai learns that Christopher's father passed away, she spends an evening at his place trying to console him, then neglects to tell Luke the truth about where she was. Meanwhile, Emily and Richard are briefly reconciled when they take in a lost dog. Finally, Luke brings Lorelai her own portable skating pond, and the Stars Hollow annual Revolutionary War reenactment takes on a racy new twist.

Rory is delighted when the headmaster of her old prep school asks her to play hostess to a young student, Anna, who is thinking of applying to Yale. However, Anna turns out to be more interested in boys than academics and runs off to party, leaving Rory to deal with Logan's elaborate practical jokes. Meanwhile, Lorelai and Luke have their first fight when she accidentally upsets him by buying an old boat that had belonged to his father.

Rory decides that she and Lorelai should split up at the next Friday night dinner and confront Richard and Emily separately about ending their separation. However, Emily dashes their hopes of a reconciliation by announcing that she is ready to begin dating. Meanwhile, Lorelai invites Christopher for lunch at the inn, unaware that Rory had warned Christopher to stay away from her mother. Feeling guilty that she hadn't told Luke about seeing Christopher, Lorelai confesses that they had lunch, and Luke "convinces" himself that he isn't jealous. Jackson is overwhelmed by the twin burdens of Sookie's pregnancy and his role as town selectman. Paris tries to observe Ramadan.

Rory is touched when Emily and Richard throw a party to introduce her to their Yale Alumni friends, but it soon becomes obvious that their ulterior motive is to find her a suitable husband. When Dean arrives at the party to pick Rory up, he realizes he doesn't belong in her privileged world. Meanwhile, Luke cooks a romantic dinner for Lorelai, but their evening is interrupted by a feuding Liz and T.J. Zack is read the riot act by Mrs. Kim, whose intimidation of Kyon also irks Lane.

Lorelai is mortified at the prospect of Luke interacting with her snooty parents--and Luke soon learns why; Rory participates in a bizarre off-campus event to research a story on Logan's secret clique; Lane and Zack have a stay-at-home first date.

Lorelai and Sookie are thrilled when author Norman Mailer and a young reporter show up repeatedly in the dining room of the Dragonfly Inn, but Sookie's awe turns to annoyance when Mailer refuses to order any food. Working on a story for the Yale newspaper, Rory uncovers evidence of an intriguing secret society to which Logan belongs. Meanwhile, when Rory's father, Christopher, appeals to Lorelai for help after his girlfriend leaves him to raise their baby daughter by himself, Rory orders him to leave Lorelai alone. Finally, Sookie realizes that she is pregnant again.

Feeling bad that her relationship with Dean has become awkward, Lorelai suggests that she and Luke double-date with Rory and Dean, but the evening turns ugly when Luke is unable to disguise the fact that he thinks Dean isn't good enough for Rory. Meanwhile, Emily and Richard are lonely and a little lost without one another, but neither can take the first step toward reconciliation. Lane is frustrated with her inability to connect with Zack

Rory and Dean find it increasingly difficult to be alone together due to their distant living arrangement and the fact that he is sharing a car with his estranged wife. Impulsively, Rory asks Dean if he only left Lynsey because she found Rory's letter, and is not completely satisfied with his response. Lorelai and Sookie run Jackson's campaign when he decides to run against Taylor for Town Selectman. Lane tells her band-mate Zach that she has feelings for him.

After Lorelai and Luke spend a romantic night together at Luke's place, Lorelai, walks into the diner early the next morning dressed in one of Luke's flannel shirts, only to discover that the place is full of customers. Lorelai is a little offended when it appears that no one cares about their relationship, until it becomes a topic of heated discussion at the town meeting. Rory has an angry exchange with a haughty, rich student named Logan after he is rude to her friend Marty. Paris holds a wake for her older lover Asher, who died over the summer. Richard and Emily bicker about their separation protocol.

Rory calls Lorelai from Rome and admits that she made a mess of things with Dean. Lorelai gives Dean a letter from Rory, but Dean's wife Lindsay finds the letter and throws Dean out of the house. Rory returns from Europe, and a terrible scene ensues when she and Lorelai run into Lindsay and her mother on the street. Meanwhile, Luke returns to Stars Hollow after many weeks helping his injured sister on the Renaissance Fair circuit. Luke and Lorelai try to find a private spot to say hello, but are interrupted by a town parade.

Picking up on the same night as last season's finale, Lorelai is very upset that Rory has lost her virginity to her married ex-boyfriend Dean. Luke is happy and relieved to learn that Lorelai wants to pursue their new romantic relationship. Meanwhile, after announcing that she and Richard are officially separated, Emily decides to leave immediately for Paris. Realizing that Dean's marriage may not be over after all, Rory agrees to spend the summer in Europe with Emily.

Lorelai suspects that Luke's intentions toward her have become serious, but she doesn't have time to dwell on it as she prepares for the opening of the Dragonfly Inn. When Jason arrives at the Inn to convince Lorelai that their breakup was a mistake, Luke tries to declare his true feelings for her.

All of Stars Hollow turns out for Liz's wedding. Jess walks her down the aisle, and Lorelai and Luke share a romantic dance, after which Luke asks Lorelai out on a date. Rory attends a drunken party and has to call Dean to drive her back to the dorm.

Depressed over the failure of his marriage, Luke resorts to a self-help tape and realizes that he already knows who his soul mate is. Lorelai is stressed out as opening day at The Dragonfly Inn approaches, and Rory pretends not to be interested when Lorelai tells her she overheard Dean and his wife fighting.

When Jason reveals that he and Richard are no longer in business together, Lorelai has a confrontation with her father. Later, after an uncomfortable Friday night dinner, Lorelai and Rory spy on Emily and make a discovery about the state of the elder Gilmores' marriage. Meanwhile, Luke tells Lorelai that he's getting a divorce.

Jason's father, Floyd, brings a lawsuit against Jason and Richard for taking his clients. Floyd also reveals that Jason and Lorelai have been dating secretly for months. Meanwhile, Dean upsets Rory when he admits he has dropped out of college to work full time.

Paris and Rory head to Florida to celebrate spring break and catch up with old Chilton friends Louise and Madeline. Luke finds out that his Nicole is seeing another man and takes his anger out on the guy’s car.

When Gran suddenly dies, Richard becomes distraught. While Emily and Lorelai are at Gran’s house, sorting through catalogs and bank statements, Emily finds a letter from Gran telling Richard not go through with their wedding and to leave her at the altar. Later, Lorelai has her own small breakdown while buying new underwear for Gran to be buried in.

Rory runs into Dean at the Dragonfly Inn and gets a glimpse of his new life. Later, Lorelai and Rory decide to spend a day window-shopping together at the mall, but they run into Emily and are caught up in her wild shopping spree.

Although she is completely exhausted by her heavy workload at Yale, Rory is still horrified when a professor suggests she drop a class. Elsewhere, Richard is infuriated when he and Lorelai both get a taste of the nastiness that Gran usually reserves for Emily.

When Lorelai does Emily a favor by attending a charity dinner, she is pleasantly surprised when Jason also shows up and Emily asks them to pretend they are a couple. Stuck in Stars Hollow while his car is being repaired, Jess keeps running into Rory, but he walks away from her every time they meet.

Luke is wary when his ditsy sister Liz shows up for an unexpected visit. Lorelai promises Jason that she will tell her parents about their relationship, but changes her mind later. Luke discovers Jess' car is missing and reports it stolen, but discovers that Jess has come back to town to pick up the car.

Lorelai is upset to discover that Luke has gotten an apartment with Nicole, but when it becomes clear that he is reluctant to actually move, Lorelai admits to him that she doesn't want him to leave Stars Hollow. Meanwhile, when Lane sneaks out of the house to play a gig with her band, Mrs. Kim finally discovers her daughter's double life and kicks her out of the house.

To prove to everyone that he really does love babies, Michel offers to baby-sit Sookie's Davey. However, Davey manages to roll under a bed and Michel calls on Lorelai for help. Elsewhere, Paris is dating a much older school professor.

Rory is invited to the Harvard/Yale football game which leads to a small rift between Emily and Richard. Lorelai agrees to go on a date with Jason and while things start out poorly, things quickly take a turn for the better.

For the Yale newspaper, Rory is given an assignment to review a ballet performance. Told that it's okay to be opinionated, she takes things a bit too far. Jason joins the group for Friday night dinner and asks Lorelai out on a date.

Stars Hollow is busy gearing up to host a festival of living pictures and the town is abuzz. Luke's almost-ex-wife asks him to postpone their divorce, Land and her band find a new guitarist, and with her pregnancy due date past, Sookie is getting anxious.

Emily begins to plan a cocktail party to launch Richard's new business and hires Lorelai and Sookie as the caterers. But Richard’s new business partner, Jason, has different plans. Elsewhere, Kirk gets ready for a date with his brother's ex-girlfriend.

Rory decides to go out on her first college date and he turns out to be a dud. Meanwhile, Lorelai asks Luke to take Rory’s place on the traditional movie night.

Lorelai starts work on the Dragonfly Inn with no help from Taylor Doose. When Rory returns from Yale for the weekend, she finds out her ex-boyfriend, Dean, is getting married. However, after one too many drinks, Dean confesses to Luke that he still has feelings for Rory.

Lorelai and Sookie start a catering business and their first customer wants a Lord of the Rings themed party. Paris begs Rory to open the door for a Yale party, but ends up regretting it. Richards goes into business with the son of a former associate.

A certain, special student from Chilton is now one of Rory suitemates at Yale. Plus, there is one more surprise; Rory finds she is not quite ready to part from Lorelai.

The Gilmore girls cram one-and-a-half weeks of school shopping and activities into three days so Rory can attend her Yale Orientation. But Luke takes the cake; he got married on the summer cruise he went on with Nicole, but there’s more, he's already filing for divorce.

As Rory's graduation day approaches, the Gilmore girls plan their long-awaited summer backpacking trip across Europe, even as Lorelai faces the possibility that the recent fire will force the owners of the Independence Inn to sell the building. Rory takes matters into her own hands when she discovers that Lorelai is making a great personal sacrifice to pay for the Yale tuition. Richard and Emily present Rory with a lavish graduation gift, and everyone is touched by Rory's moving valedictory speech. Meanwhile, Luke has second thoughts about a summer cruise with his new girlfriend.

After the blow-up with Luke, Jess leaves Stars Hollow for Venice, California, to stay with Jimmy, the father he knows almost nothing about. Jimmy admits he isn't capable of being a father, but promises to ask his live-in girlfriend Sasha to let Jess stay. Back in Stars Hollow, at the same time Lorelai is wondering how to tell Rory that Jess is gone, she learns that the money Richard gave her will make Rory ineligible for financial aid at Yale. Feeling stressed out about everything, Rory unexpectedly confronts Emily over her treatment of Lorelai.

Both Rory and Jess avoid one another when they find it difficult to deal with their emotions after the fight at the party. When Lorelai and Sookie learn that the owner of the Dragonfly Inn has passed away, they see their chance to buy the inn of their dreams. Jess' long-lost father, Jimmy, shows up in Stars Hollow and introduces himself to Jess, then suddenly leaves town. Luke is furious when he learns Jess has flunked out of high school and gives him an ultimatum to repeat his senior year or leave. Rory finds out that Dean is engaged to be married. Lane's beau, Dave, pleads his case to a stoic Mrs. Kim.

With graduation approaching, Rory is happily looking forward to attending the Stars Hollow High School prom with Jess, but he gets some surprising news from Principal Merten. Lane's band makes its debut at a big party, but the evening ends on an ugly note when the long-standing animosity between Jess and Dean finally erupts into a fist fight. Meanwhile, Lorelai gets roped into serving on the parents' committee for the Chilton graduation party, putting her back in contact with a very uncomfortable Max Medina.

While Lorelai deals with the rebuilding of the fire-damaged Inn, Rory schemes to give her mom a great birthday party, complete with a gigantic pizza. Richard surprises Lorelai with a large check from an investment he made when she was born, and Lorelai uses part of the money to repay her parents for Rory's education, a gesture which does not please Emily. Meanwhile, Luke confirms his fear that Jess has been skipping school to work extra shifts at Wal-Mart. Luke agrees to meet Nicole's parents. Paris returns to school a changed person.

When a meeting of the Edgar Allan Poe Society at the Independence Inn is interrupted by a fire, Lorelai must find rooms for the guests at various homes around town. Forced to give up her own room, Lorelai spends the night at Luke's. Trying to decide among Harvard, Yale and Princeton, Lorelai and Rory make an extensive list of pros and cons for each school. Luke worries that Jess may be skipping school when he learns that Jess has been working a surprising number of hours at Wal-Mart. Rory visits a humiliated and hibernating Paris to deliver school assignments and a pep talk.

While nervously waiting for their college acceptance letters to arrive, Rory and Paris find themselves competing to give a speech at Chilton's bi-centennial, where Paris makes a startling admission. When Lorelai runs into her former fiance, Max Medina and they share a passionate kiss, she is left to wonder if ending the engagement was the right decision. Sookie's strange behavior has a surprising explanation.

Tired of waiting for Jess to call and make plans for the weekend, Rory goes to a hockey game with Lane where she runs into Dean and his new girlfriend, Lindsay. Lorelai confronts Jess about his poor treatment of Rory. Meanwhile, Gran comes to stay with the Gilmores for a few days and Emily is shocked to find her mother-in-law kissing a man.

Lorelai goes off with her new boyfriend for a weekend in New York, but worries about leaving Rory and Jess alone together. Meanwhile, when Jess shows up for dinner with Rory and her grandmother, Emily, and refuses to explain his black eye. Rory accuses Jess of fighting with Dean. Lane hatches a plan in order to hang out with her new beau.

Sherry's carefully planned labor goes awry when she goes into labor early and Christopher is out of town. Sherry asks Rory to be with her at the hospital, which reminds Lorelai of the day that Rory was born. Flashbacks tell the story of 16-year-old Lorelai as she learns she is pregnant, decides not to marry Christopher, and ultimately leaves home with her new baby. Luke goes on his first date with Nicole.

When Lorelai surprises herself by agreeing to go on a fishing date with her new beau Alex, she turns to Luke for a lesson in fishing techniques. The political battle between Rory and Paris heats up when Paris tries to have Rory impeached. Meanwhile, Lane plots to go to the prom with Dave, and Luke asks Taylor's attorney out on a date.

Rory is set up by the manipulative Francie who convinces Paris that Rory has been plotting against her. When Emily is sued by a former maid, Lorelai worries that giving a deposition in the case will cause more problems with her mother. Meanwhile, Lorelai meets an interesting new man at a business seminar.

Lorelai has to miss Stars Hollow's Winter Carnival when Great Grandmother Gilmore pays a surprise visit and insists on having dinner with Richard and Emily at Lorelai's inn, where she makes a surprise announcement. Meanwhile, Rory's plans to enjoy the carnival with Jess are complicated when they run into Dean and his little sister Clara.

Emily insists that Lorelai and Rory come to Thanksgiving Day dinner, which causes the girls to be even more overbooked: they have already committed to three other feasts, including celebrations being held by Lane, Luke and Sookie. While dining at the Gilmore estate, Lorelai is floored to learn that Rory applied to Yale University without telling her.

Richard corners Rory at a family dinner and persuades her to accompany him on a visit to Yale University, his alma mater. Although Rory has her heart set on going to Harvard, she reluctantly accepts the invitation, and the trip becomes a family affair when Emily and Lorelai tag along. Once they arrive on campus, however, Rory is infuriated to learn that she has an appointment with the dean of admissions. Meanwhile, back in Stars Hollow, Luke lays down the law to Jess about his relationship with Rory.

Determined to win the annual Stars Hollow 24-hour dance marathon, Lorelai forces Rory to be her partner. While everyone in town dances around them, Rory and Jess can't seem to stop arguing with each other, a fact that is not lost on Dean. Meanwhile, Lane and Paris are both surprised when the boys they like drop by to see them.

Jess buys a used car from Gypsy, and Luke worries where Jess got that kind of money. Luke is amused when he finally gets Jess to admit that he has a part-time job at Wal-Mart. Lane takes it as a personal affront that Jess would get his own car after totaling Rory's. Rory gets an invitation to Sherry's baby shower, and admits to Lorelai that she's been talking to Christopher a bit on the phone. Lorelai drives Rory to the shower and gets talked into attending as well by Sherry. Sherry drives Lorelai nuts with her perfection and her planning and her gushing about how incredible Christopher has been through everything. Lorelai fumes on the way home with Rory and deviled eggs that they were forced to take with them. Rory suggests they throw the deviled eggs at Jess's car for catharsis. It works. The town loner gets permission from the town church to stage a protest, but when his banner falls the wrong way and then rips, no one can figure out what he's protesting.

Rory finds herself taking over Lorelai's job of watering their new neighbor's lawn while he's on a business trip, but she has trouble with the spigot and can't get the water to turn off. She runs to town for help and Jess ends up coming to her rescue, but when he hears that Dean is on his way, he turns the water back on so that Dean can then rescue Rory. Lorelai goes to a charity auction that her mother organizes and meets a cute guy named Peyton. She asks her mother for his number, and she and Peyton end up planning on going to a David Bowie concert next week, but also planning a dinner date sooner. After dinner with Peyton, Lorelai realizes he's incredibly boring, but when she tells her mother that she wants to cancel her concert date, her mother freaks out. Emily is friends with Peyton's mother, and is worried that this slight by Lorelai will affect her social standing in her DAR circle. After getting yelled at by her father, Lorelai realizes how important this is to Emily, and agrees to go to the concert with Peyton if it will make her mother happy.

Lorelai gives a talk at the Stars Hollow high school about her career, but the school moms get mad when she ends up fielding more questions about her teen pregnancy than anything else. Lane, distraught over having to sneak around to practice with her band and her mother making her apply to religious colleges, decides to dye her hair purple, but chickens out and dyes it back to black before her mom sees it. Rory, helping Lane with her hair-dying experiment, realizes that Jess's girlfriend Shane works at the local beauty supply store, and finds herself being uncontrollably rude to the ditsy blonde. Luke confronts Jess about his relationship with Shane, and Jess admits that he doesn't really care about her, he's just with her because the girl he really likes isn't interested in him. Jess recommends that Luke do something similar and stop wasting his time waiting for Lorelai.

Rory receives her Harvard application in the mail and then learns from a visiting panel of Ivy League admissions experts at Chilton that all her instincts about how to fill it out were wrong. After panicking about her chances of getting into Harvard, Rory and Lorelai decide to consult a nearby Harvard alum, Darren Springsteen, and end up joining him and his Harvard-perfect family for a lunch filled with quiz questions, which calms her nerves about college. Darren later tells Rory that he thinks she's perfect for Harvard and he'll put in a good word with the admissions office for her. Later, the reality of college hits home for both Dean and Lorelai. Meanwhile, Taylor bullies Luke into renting him the retail space that he bought next door to open an old fashioned soda shoppe and Lane meets Dave, an aspiring musician looking for a drummer for his band.

Lorelai and Emily continue to fight about over what happened between them, and Rory has to run interference. At school, Rory also has to run interference between Paris and Francie, and eventually comes up with a way to stop their fighting. Kirk asks Lorelai out, and Lorelai has to figure out a way to let him down easy. Things seem to go better until Christopher shows up at Friday night dinner, and both Lorelai and Rory have to confront him about Sherry. Meanwhile, Rory talks to Jess about Shane and why she never wrote him during the summer.

On her last night in Washington D.C. over the summer, Rory helps Paris get ready for an unexpected date. While missing Rory, Lorelai has been having strange dreams, including being married to having twins with Luke. Sookie decides she needs to make the house more masculine for Jackson even though he insists that he likes it the way it is. Taylor puts together an end of summer festival for Stars Hollow. When Rory gets back, she is upset to see Jess making out with a platinum blonde in the middle of town and admits to her mother about the kiss she and Jess shared, sparking a fight between Rory and Lorelai. Lorelai also fights with her parents when she tells them about Sherry and Christopher, and returns to Luke's in hopes of a reconciliation with him.

Christopher returns to town for Rory's cast removal and decides to stay for Sookie's wedding. Christopher tells Lorelai that his relationship with Sherry is over and they rekindle their past romance. However, Sherry calls with startling news and Christopher returns to Boston, devastating Lorelai. Meanwhile, Paris gets Rory to run as her vice-president in the student body elections and win, which means Rory will have to spend the summer in Washington D.C. Jess returns to Stars Hollow and asks Luke if he can stay. At the wedding, Rory sees Jess and they kiss, but Rory runs off as the wedding begins.

Rory invites Emily and Richard to Lorelai's graduation from business school but misses the graduation when she gets a call from Jess and cuts school to visit him in New York. Lorelai forgives Rory after she sees that Rory has fallen for Jess.

After the accident Rory is mad to find that everyone blames Jess for the accident. Luke closes the diner to go fishing. Meanwhile, Richard opens a new office and Lorelai helps him after his old secretary declines transferring to Richard's office and Lane finds that her dream in life is to be a drummer in a band.

Luke asks Rory to tutor Jess, which goes okay until they decide to go for ice cream and get into a car wreck with Jess behind the wheel. Rory gets sent to the hospital with a broken arm and Lorelai blames Luke for the accident. Christopher arrives to take care of Rory and Luke sends Jess home.

Richard helps Rory's group create a product for the Business Fair at Chilton. Richard becomes too involved in the project and takes it personally when the group doesn't win first place. Later, Richard decides to start a new business and Dean tries to be close to Rory after fearing that he's losing her to Jess.

Lorelai and Rory help Luke at the diner while he plans his uncle Louie's funeral. However, none of Louie's friends attend the funeral but they all come together for a reception for Louie at Luke's. Meanwhile, Emily helps Sookie plan her wedding and Rory forces Jess to help Luke out more.

Emily and Lorelai go to a spa together for the weekend and Emily tries to bond with Lorelai by booking them to do everything together. At home, Rory plans on having a quiet night alone but Paris, Jess and Dean all come over, resulting in Paris taking the blame for Jess being there and realizing Jess's feelings.

Luke decides to find a new, bigger place to live, and with Lorelai's help, he finds one that he likes. But after finding out that Taylor owns the apartment, Luke throws out his application and buys the building next to his diner. Meanwhile, Dean notices that Rory isn't wearing the bracelet he made her, sending Rory into a panic to find the bracelet.

Christopher returns to town and brings his girlfriend, Sherry, along. Sherry wants to bond with Rory since her and Christopher are becoming serious. Emily finds out about Sherry and tells Lorelai that she has always wanted her and Christopher to end up together. Lorelai tells Christopher that she's always thought that they would get back together, too, and that's why she's never had a relationship that lasted. Christopher gets angry for Lorelai blaming him for her bad relationships, leaving Lorelai hurt while Luke watches.

At the Stars Hollow picnic basket auction, Jess outbids Dean for Rory's basket, winning the chance to have lunch with Rory and causing Rory and Dean to fight. Jackson doesn't bid on Sookie's basket after thinking she doesn't want to move in with him, but they reconcile when he buys back the basket, then proposes to Sookie. Miss Patty attempts to set Lorelai up but Luke comes to the rescue and bids on Lorelai's basket. After listening to Dean's concerns about Rory and Jess, Lorelai and Rory fight over Dean confiding in Lorelai.

Emily sends Richard to spend the day with Lorelai in Stars Hollow. Richard passes judgment on every aspect of Lorelai's day, from what she eats for breakfast to how she runs her business. Meanwhile, Rory inadvertently gets the video store to censor its movies and Dean comes over with a surprise for Rory.

When Lorelai's house gets termites, Rory defies her mother and tells Emily about Lorelai not being about to get a loan. After not being able to come up with another way, Lorelai is forced to ask Emily to co-sign a loan with her. Meanwhile, Lane decides to become a cheerleader, straining her friendship with Rory.

A snowstorm prevents the Bracebridge group from having a historical dinner at the Inn so Lorelai and Sookie invite their friends to the dinner. At dinner, Richard confesses that he quit his job and Jess tries to work his way between Dean and Rory.

Lorelai goes on a 'casual date' with Paul, one of the students in her business class. When Paul comes to the diner, Luke and the rest of the town make fun of Lorelai for dating someone so young. Sookie tells Lorelai that Luke has a crush on her and seeing her dating other guys makes him jealous. Meanwhile, Rory has to perform the final scene of Romeo and Juliet with Tristan, making Dean angry. At the performance, Tristan is pulled from school after a prank and Lorelai lets Luke know that that he'll always be a very important part of her life.

Lorelai and Sookie start up their plans to open an inn, but get stalled when the owner of the inn refuses to sell the property. The unexpected arrival of Mia, the owner of the Independence Inn, makes Lorelai feel guilty about wanting to leave the Independence Inn. However, Mia is supportive of their plans and tells everyone that she's planning on selling the inn. Emily confronts Mia in order to meet the woman who was such an important part of both Rory and Lorelai's life. Meanwhile, someone planted a fake murder scene in front of Doose's market. Rory tells Jess that she knows he's the culprit, how he's a jerk for letting Luke take all the heat from everyone in Stars Hollow. He agrees to lighten up and be more considerate of Luke.

The Headmaster Charlton tells the Gilmore girls that they need to improve on their social skills. Rory tries to socialize by sitting with some girls at lunch, but sits with the"Puffs", a secret society at Chilton. The Puffs accept Paris and Rory into their group and have a ceremony to welcome the new members by kidnapping them and breaking into the Headmaster's office at school. Unfortunately, they get caught by Headmaster Charlton. Meanwhile, Lorelai joins the Booster Club, and offers the inn to them for their fashion show.

The annual debutant ball is coming up, and Emily's friends are nagging her to put Rory in it. When Emily asks Rory, she accepts, to Lorelai's dismay. Emily hopes that the ball will help bring Richard back into their social circle, but instead, it makes him angry, and causes them to fight at the ball. Also, Christopher agrees to present Rory and shocks Lorelai with news about his new relationship.

Luke's sister Liz feels like her son Jess is getting into too much trouble and asks Luke to take care of him. Lorelai decides to throw Jess a welcome party, but at the party Jess is only nice to Rory. Luke receives phone calls about Jess stealing money and lawn gnomes and tries to talk to Jess, but becomes too angry, and pushes him into the lake. Later, Luke goes to confront Jess and lays down his new rules. Meanwhile, Paris is trying to make Rory's life miserable at "The Franklin" by assigning to interview Mr. Medina.

Rory and Lorelai take a road trip to Harvard, where Rory fits right in. She feels like this is the place for her. When they return home, Lorelai cries when she sees the chuppah that Luke made for her, while Luke comforts her. Seeing how Rory is growing up, Lorelai decides to start planning for her own inn.

Rory, Sookie, Michel and Emily go to a club for Lorelai's bachlorette party, where Emily tells story about her and Richard's wedding. Lorelai notices how everyone else's relationship is different than hers, and begins to have doubts about the wedding. When Rory and Lorelai get home, Lorelai says that she is calling the wedding off, and that they are going on a road trip.

Rory begins to stress because she is falling behind on extra curricular activities, leaving her with less time for Dean. Also, Rory and Richard make up, while Emily and Lorelai get into a fight because Lorelai did not tell her about Max and his proposal.

Lorelai tells Luke about Max and his proposal, and accepts it. Also, Lane's parents got her a one-way ticket to Korea for the summer, which frightens her. Rory invites Dean over for Friday night dinner, because they are celebrating her getting into the top 3% in her class. Tension rises between Dean and Richard when he accuses Dean of not being good enough for Rory, causing her to fight with her grandfather and causing Emily to fear that they'll lose Rory.

Rachel leaves Stars Hollow when she realizes who Luke really has feelings for. Luke and Max have an argument over Lorelai, making Max think that he and Lorelai dated. Meanwhile, Rory defends the town troubadour, which brings her and Dean together, and finally says "I love you". Max, wanting to show Lorelai that he was serious about his proposal, surprises her with 1000 daises and asks his life-changing question again.

Lorelai helps Luke buy a birthday present for Rachel, but ends up buying him a new wardrobe along the way. Still upset over the fact that she and Dean broke up, Rory becomes very upset when she finds out that Lane and Dean are science project partners, and then becomes angered when she finds out that her mom and Max have gotten back together. She and Lorelai fight, and Rory runs away to her grandparent's house in Hartford. Wanting to hear the whole story about Dean and Rory's break up, Lorelai talks to Dean and hears what happened on their anniversary date, worrying Lorelai that Rory has the same commitment problem as she does.

Rachel discovers an abandoned inn and shows to Lorelai, who immediately falls in love with it. Meanwhile, Rory takes Emily on a tour of Stars Hollow where immediately befriends Mrs. Kim and Michel, but becomes upset when she sees Lorelai and Rory's first home. Lastly, Lorelai gives Rune a job at the inn as a favor to Sookie.

Emily is upset when she finds out that Richard's mother, Trix is coming by for a visit. Meanwhile, Paris is not pleased that Tristan asked Rory out on a date. When Paris talks to Rory about it, she denies it, making Paris even madder. During Friday night dinner, Trix offers to help Lorelai and Rory, but Emily, afraid of losing Lorelai and Rory, warns Trix not to.

Now broken up with Dean, Rory decides to take her mind off of the break-up by making lists and not listening Lorelai's advice to wallow. After being invited to a party at Madeline's, Rory decides to go and Lane tags along. However, things take when Rory finds herself alone with Tristan, who also just broke up with his girlfriend and is in need of consoling. Meanwhile, Lane meets a Korean boy.

A woman from Luke's past comes back to Stars Hollow, and tells Luke that she is here to stay. Rory misses Friday night dinner to go on a three month anniversary date with Dean. At Friday night dinner, Emily tries to set Lorelai up with a family friend, much to Lorelai's disgust. Meanwhile, Dean surprises Rory with a fancy dinner, then shows her a car that he's building for her. But the night takes an unexpected turn when Dean tells Rory he loves her and Rory doesn't answer him back.

Christopher returns to make up for lost time with Rory, and Emily, elated about his return, invites both Christopher and his parents to Friday Night Dinner. But tensions between the Haydens and the Gilmores rise, resulting in a fight about Lorelai and Christopher's past. After the fight, Lorelai goes to her old room, to find Christopher on the balcony and old romances are rekindled. The next morning, Lorelai realizes she forgot about Luke and the paint, and apologizes. When Lorelai returns home, Christopher is waiting to ask Lorelai a question.

It is The Donna Reed Show night at the Gilmores, and Dean tells the girls that he thinks the idea of a wife cooking and cleaning for her husband is nice, which doesn't go over too well. The next day Rory comes home with a bird, who turns out to be her mid term project. She is asked to babysit Babette's new kitten, leaving Lorelai with her bird. At Babette's, Rory thinks about her fight with Dean then decides to cook dinner and dress like Donna Reed to make up. Lorelai arrives back home, she finds that the bird has escaped, and calls Luke to find it. Meanwhile, an unexpected visitor reappears in Lorelai's and Rory's life.

Lorelai heads up the Stars Hollow Charity Rummage Sale and ends up buying a sweatshirt that Luke donated. When she wears it around town, Lorelai is bewildered when Luke is angry to see it. Later, Sookie reveals to Lorelai that the previous owner of the sweatshirt was Luke's first serious girlfriend. Meanwhile, Sookie is given tickets to the Bangles concert in New York and Rory invites Madeline, Paris, and Louise to go with them to New York. At the concert, Madeline and Louise end up leaving to go to a party, much to the horror of Lorelai.

After helping Sookie to ask Jackson out, Lorelai finds out that the only way for Jackson and Sookie to go out is for Lorelai to go with them on a double date. Lorelai reluctantly accepts, ending up with the date from hell -- Jackson's cousin Rune. Meanwhile, Rory and Lane double date with Dean and his friend Todd without telling their mothers where they actually are. Later, Luke finally gets up the courage to ask Lorelai out, but Mrs. Kim interrupts when she cannot find Lane.

Lorelai and Max's relationship begins to become more serious, but Lorelai begins to back out when she sees how much Rory likes him being a part of their lives. At Parents' Day, Lorelai tries to break up with Max, but they end up kissing while Paris watches in the doorway. In order to get the school's mind of her parents' bitter divorce, Paris exposes Max and Lorelai's relationship, much to the horror of Rory. Meanwhile, Sookie asks Jackson out.

Lorelai and Rory's relationship is still a little rocky from the night of the dance, as is Emily and Lorelai's relationship, causing Rory to go to the elder Gilmore's Christmas party alone. While Rory is at dinner, Dean and Lorelai are able to work things out, and Lorelai ends up spending her evening with Luke who makes her a festive "Santa Burger". However, their evening is cut short when Lorelai gets a frantic call from Rory that Richard collapsed. With emotions running high, Lorelai finds it hard to visit her father and leans on Luke for support. Later, Rory and Lorelai reconcile their differences when they see just how valuable life is.

Rory asks Dean to the Chilton formal despite reluctance to do so. While making Rory's dress, Lorelai throws her back out and Emily, noticing the pain she's in, insists that she stay with Lorelai while Rory's at the formal. At the dance, Dean has an encounter with Tristan that leads to a fist-fight between the two. After the dance, Rory and Dean fall asleep together while reading as Miss Patty's. The next morning, Lorelai wakes up to the angry voice of Emily and finds that Rory has not returned home.

The first snow of the season hits Stars Hollow -- Lorelai's favorite time of year. The roads ice over and Rory is forced to stay with her grandparents where she introduces them to the wonders of frozen pizza. Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai runs into Max, whose car had died on his way home. Since he's stranded in Stars Hollow for the night, Lorelai takes him out to dinner and a movie, but their date is cut short when they find Lane at Lorelai's, waiting for Rory. Later, Rory returns home and is shocked to find her teacher asleep on the couch.

Dean and Rory share their first kiss, but Rory decides to hide the news from her mother. When Lorelai hears about the kiss from Mrs. Kim, she tries to prove to Rory that she's okay with Dean by inviting him to join their movie night. There, Lorelai lays down the law when it comes to dating her daughter.

It is Rory's 16th birthday and both Lorelai and Emily have planned parties for Rory. At Emily's, all of Rory's classmates are invited leading Rory to have her first fight with Emily. The following day, Lorelai throws Rory another bash and Emily and Richard decide to attend hoping to reconcile with Rory. However, while at the party, both Emily and Richard realize how different Rory and Lorelai's lives are from their own. Later, Dean comes by once everyone has left to give Rory a bracelet he had made for her. As they hold hands in the yard, Lorelai oversees.

At the Chilton bake sale, Lorelai runs into Mr. Medina and agrees to have coffee with him. When they get together, he insists that they should date, and Lorelai agrees to go to dinner with him. But when Lorelai receives a call from Rory saying that their neighbor's cat, Cinnamon, had died, their date slips her mind as she helps prepare for the wake. During the wake, Rory walks outside to see none other than Mr. Medina outside on her porch, waiting for Lorelai. Later at the wake, Rory has an awkward encounter with Dean who admits his feelings for her.

At school, Rory receives her first D ever, leading her to study like crazy for the upcoming exam. After she and Lorelai spend all night reviewing Shakespeare, they oversleep. To make matters worse, on her way to school Rory hits a deer which further delays her arrival to Chilton. When she finally makes it to school, she is denied from taking the test and does not handle it well. Lorelai is called in, and tells off the headmaster and Mr. Medina.

Rory joins Richard for a round of golf at the club, finding that she enjoys spending time with her grandfather. When Rory returns from her day at the club, Lorelai is not to happy about the fact that Rory may want to be a part of the world she ran away from, resulting in her picking a fight with Rory. Meanwhile, Lorelai helps plan a wedding for a set of twin girls who are marrying a set of twin boys.

It is the first day of Chilton for the Gilmores, and Lorelai oversleeps. Realizing that she does not have enough time to pick up her clothes from the dry-cleaners, she is forced to wear a pink tie-dye shirt and "Daisy Duke" shorts, an outfit that upsets both Emily and Rory. The rest of the day is downhill from there for Rory, who picks up the nickname Mary and makes enemies with Paris Geller who sees Rory as her competition.

When Rory gets accepted into Chilton, Lorelai has to deal with the fact that she can not afford the school and must go to her parents for help. Her parents, Emily and Richard, help her out by providing a loan to pay for the school, but in return ask that her and Rory must attend dinner every Friday night at their house.

During her last couple of days at Stars Hollow High, Rory meets a new transfer student, Dean, and begins to reconsider her transfer to Chilton. When Lorelai sees that Rory is thinking of giving up her future for a boy, she becomes angered and they engage in their first fight ever.
