In Karneval season 1 episode 4, titled Opus 4: Evening Swallow, we follow the continued journey of Nai, a naive but resilient boy, and Gareki, a skilled thief, as they navigate the mysterious world of Circus - a covert organization that operates under the guise of a traveling carnival.
The episode opens with Nai and Gareki receiving an invitation from Circus to attend a special auction, where they hope to obtain information about Nai's missing friend Karoku and the organization known as Kafka. However, before they can set off, they are interrupted by a pair of strangers: Uro and Kifa. Uro, a tall and imposing man, claims to be a member of Circus and warns Nai and Gareki of the dangers they may face at the auction. Kifa, a cheerful young girl, insists on joining the group, much to Gareki's annoyance.
As they journey to the auction, their caravan is intercepted by a group of bandits who demand they hand over their valuables. Uro quickly dispatches the bandits with ease, impressing Nai and Gareki with his fighting skills. However, their relief is short-lived as they soon discover that the bandits were only a distraction, and their caravan has been ambushed by a group of Kafka agents.
In the chaos of the attack, Nai is separated from the others and taken captive by Kafka. Meanwhile, Gareki, Uro, and Kifa fight off the remaining agents and regroup with the rest of Circus. They discover that Kafka is planning to auction off Nai to the highest bidder, as he possesses valuable information about the organization.
Determined to rescue Nai, Gareki and Uro infiltrate the auction disguised as buyers. They come face to face with none other than Tsukumo, a powerful member of Circus who is also searching for Karoku. Tsukumo joins forces with Gareki and Uro to rescue Nai, and together they devise a plan to outbid Kafka's clients.
The tension builds as the auction commences, with Nai on the verge of being sold to a dangerous enemy. However, the group manages to outbid Kafka's client at the last minute, securing Nai's freedom.
