This anime series tells the story of a medical student nicknamed Black Jack, who becomes involved in a series of incidents that lead him on a path that sees him collide with a number of medical experts linked to a group researching the latest in prosthetic's. The series opens with Black Jack being presented with the case of a young boy who has been injured during a bus crash, which means the trainee surgeon must look for ways of helping the boy survive into the future. Over the course of the series a number of different groups cross the path of the medical student who are largely looking for a good way of seeking out the best options for improving the mechanical prosthetic's used on patients. One of the teachers of Black Jack is looking for a way of regaining the use of his hands to return to work and begins to push him to take on a role with an experimental set of procedures.
