In this episode of Mystery Diners, titled "Extra Curricular," the team of undercover diners heads to a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles after the owners become suspicious that their employees are throwing after-hours parties in the restaurant. The owners are concerned about the potential for damage to the restaurant and theft of supplies, and they hope the Mystery Diners team can figure out what's really going on.
As the episode gets started, viewers are introduced to the owners of the sushi restaurant, who are worried about their employees taking advantage of their trust. They're particularly concerned about one employee, who they fear is using the restaurant as a party space when it's not open for business.
To get to the bottom of things, the Mystery Diners team sends in two undercover operatives, who will pose as new employees at the restaurant. One of them will work as a server, while the other will work in the kitchen. With hidden cameras and microphones, they'll be able to keep an eye on things and report back to the owners with their findings.
Initially, things seem to be going well at the restaurant. The new employees are greeted warmly by their coworkers, and they're taught the ins and outs of sushi service by the restaurant's experienced staff. However, as the night wears on, they begin to notice some unusual activity.
The first red flag comes when one of the current employees lets slip that she's planning a party for the weekend. Sensing an opportunity, the Mystery Diners operatives decide to follow her to see where the party will be held. They're surprised to discover that it's being held in the sushi restaurant itself, after hours.
As they sneak around the restaurant, the Mystery Diners operatives begin to uncover more and more questionable behavior. They find one employee who's stealing supplies from the restaurant to take home, and another who's been tampering with the kitchen equipment. They also discover that the employee who's been throwing the parties is allowing people to drink on the premises, which is against the restaurant's policies.
When they report back to the owners with their findings, they're shocked by what they've uncovered. The owners confront the employees, and there's a lot of finger-pointing and blame-shifting as the truth comes out. However, thanks to the Mystery Diners team, the owners are finally able to get to the bottom of what's been going on at their restaurant.
