Senran Kagura is the anime adaptation of a media franchise which includes video games and comic books. The series is a single season of twelve episodes which Takao Yoshioka wrote, Takashi Watanabe directed, and Artland studios produced. The series focuses on a group of high school-aged ninjas-in-training and their efforts in becoming superb ninjas and assassins. This heroic, all-female, band of ninjas attend Kokuritsu Hanz? Gakuin, (translated as Hanzo Academy) which was established to counter ninja assaults from companies and individuals with money and power. The featured protagonists of the series include Asuka, an upbeat sophomore with a set of ninja daggers and ranidaphobia but whose family summoning spells all involve frogs; Ikaruga, the serious junior who wields a katana and summons multiple phoenix birds succeeded her adopted family as the head of its clan, due to the family's eldest son being a failure of a ninja; Katsuragi, a lecherous junior whose trademark weapon is a set of iron greaves and summons dragons with magic; Yagyuu, the eye-patch-wearing freshman prodigy who uses a weaponized umbrella and can summon various giant squids; and Hibari, a youthful and childish freshman whose summoning magic conjures various giant pink rabbits. Lastly, Murasame, Ikaruga's adopted brother, helps the team out through actions like helping Asuka get over her fear of frogs to improve herself. Antagonists within the series have focused on the Hiritsu Hebi Joshi Gakuen, translated as the Serpent Academy for Girls. Five dark shinobi of the Serpent Academy, lead by a mysterious Suzune, attack the Hanzo Academy due to possessing one half of a pair of mystical scrolls that when combined, will grant the Serpent Academy immense powers. The outcome of the Hanzo shinobi's first clash with the Serpent shinobi indicates that only Yagyuu was able to defeat her opponent before the Serpents retreated.
