Sophia is a Russian television series produced in 2016 by Russian director Aleksey Andrianov. The show boasts of a star-studded cast featuring Mariya Andreeva, Vilen Babichev, and Ivan Oganesyan among others. Sophia is a historical drama series inspired by the early days of Moscow. It follows the life of the famous Sophia Palaiologina, a Byzantine princess and wife of Ivan III, the Grand Prince of Muscovy.

The series begins in the 15th century, a time of turmoil and war in Moscow. The Mongol Empire had just fallen, and the city was on the brink of a new era. Sophia, a young and beautiful princess from Byzantium, is married off to the Grand Prince Ivan III to cement a political alliance between the two empires. Sophia has to adapt herself to the new environment and deal with the challenges that come with being a foreigner in a new land.

Sophia is a well-educated princess, and her knowledge of philosophy, art, and diplomacy helps her to win over the people around her. However, she soon realizes that life in Moscow is not as glamourous as it seemed. Sophia has to navigate the treacherous court politics, fight for her position in the royal family, and deal with the rivalry between her husband Ivan and his powerful uncle. She soon finds herself at the center of a web of conspiracies that threatens to tear her world apart.

Mariya Andreeva, the lead actress who plays Sophia, delivers a remarkable performance. She portrays her character with great sensitivity and grace, capturing the spirit of one of the most beautiful and intelligent women of her time. Vilen Babichev, who plays Ivan III, is also impressive. He portrays Ivan as a strong-willed ruler who cares for his people but is also consumed by his lust for power. The chemistry between the two actors is excellent, and they bring a touch of romance to the series.

Apart from the lead characters, the series also features some other interesting characters. There is Ivan's uncle Dmitry, who is always plotting against his nephew, and the loyal courtier Semyon, who supports Sophia in her struggles. The show also touches upon the lives of ordinary people in Moscow, highlighting their struggles and aspirations.

One of the highlights of the series is the production design. The show recreates the atmosphere of medieval Moscow with great accuracy. The costumes, sets, and props are all impeccable, reflecting the grandeur of the time. The visuals are stunning, and the cinematography is top-notch.

The show's music also deserves a special mention. The haunting score by composer Anton Silaev adds to the drama and emotion of the series.

Overall, Sophia is an engaging historical drama series that takes the viewers back in time to the early days of Moscow. It's a visual treat and features excellent performances by the cast.
